Top Text Title: Top Text: Fall 2009 Volume 7 Issue 1 From the Presidents’ Desk… Welcome to the 2009-10 school year! Hopefully you are rejuvenated for another year of teaching and learning. As professionals, it is critical that we continue to learn and hone our craft as literacy professionals. South Central Reading Council provides wonderful opportunities to grow professionally. Our board is a group of volunteers representing many of our various school districts. Beginning last spring and extending over this summer, we have been planning events that we are excited to announce. Please consider joining us at our meetings as you expand your teaching repertoire and collaborate with colleagues from around the county and region. Also, please consider inviting a fellow teacher or administrator to join our organization. Reach out to the young teachers who are just starting their journey in this wonderful profession. As a council, we are going green and will no longer be sending out print copies of our newsletter. South Central Reading Council’s website is full of information. Please save this site in your ‘favorites’: http://www.teacherweb.com/PA/SouthCentralReadingCouncil/SouthCentralReadingCou ncil/ The website offers a discussion group related to reading, links to reading websites, and information pertaining to our events, both past and present. We have two events planned for the fall. The first event features Ellin Keene and Bruce Morgan. We have joined with three other councils to host a 2009 Region 4 Literacy Conference. Ellin Keene and Bruce Morgan will be at the Sheraton Harrisburg-Hershey on September 19th, 2009. Their timely topic is, “Literacy Learning and the Development of Thought: Teaching Literacy Well in an Era of Growing Demands.” The reservation deadline is September 11th. This is one event you will not want to miss! We invite you to join us at the Martin Memorial Library for a “Book Tasting” by Paula Gilbert on October 14th. Gather up your librarian and head downtown to hear what’s new in children’s and adolescent literature. “Learning is not achieved by chance; it must be sought for with ardor and attended to with diligence.” – Abigail Adams Yours in literacy, Kim Stoltz Links Section Title:
