Each six weeks, the guidance counselor has the opportunity to visit every classroom and present a developmental guidance lesson. There is a central theme for each six weeks, but each grade level receives a lesson that is specifically designed for them. During the first six weeks, the theme was study skills. Our second lesson was all about friendship. The third guidance lesson is now complete at both elementary schools. This lesson focused on feelings and emotions. Kindergarten's focus was on dealing with fears. First and second graders learned how to use the anger stop light. Third and fourth grade students learned about their own anger buttons and how to deal with small anger situations before they become huge and hard to manage. Fifth graders learned about cliques and how cliques and friends can influence feelings and emotions. The fourth guidance lesson was taught during the month of March. This lesson focused on bullying. Also in March, there was an all school assembly at Northwestern Elementary School dealing with this same topic. Parents should see handouts coming home after these lessons are presented in the classroom. Please take a few minutes to review these papers with your child.
