Weekly Updates

Dear SBS Families,

As Christians we are urged to pray.  In Colossians 4:2, we are told to “continue earnestly in prayer”, in Thessalonians 5:17, “pray without ceasing”.  In this busy world of ours, how can we honor this practice?  Perhaps we can look differently at the definition of prayer, and view it as an awareness of God’s presence rather than an activity for God.  If we become more aware of God’s presence in our lives, then our lives and all of the demands and obligations we encounter become prayer.  As we rush in the morning to get ourselves ready for work, and the children ready for school, there might be an opportunity for us to stop and thank God for work and children.  As we wait in a line at a store, attending a sporting event, or just go about the routine of our lives, perhaps we can be mindful of God’s presence and thank Him for the people and situation He presents to us.

This Wednesday, May 23rd, you will receive your child’s Terra Nova Home Report.  At our Open Forum, that evening, I will elaborate on what that report means for you and give an overview of our school Terra Nova scores.  Please join us at 7:00 PM on May 23rd in O’Brien Hall.

Recently we sent four sixth and seventh grade student leaders to the Leadership Workshop sponsored by Merion Mercy Academy.  This workshop has been developed over the past few years to identify and teach those specific personal qualities and skills needed for effective leadership during the middle school years and beyond.  Members of MMA’s Student Council and Ministry Team worked with these student representatives to help them develop a stronger sense of their own leadership style. We are very proud of Lauren Andrusko, Claire Boylan, Theresa Kearney, and Kerri Quinn for representing us at MMA.

The 8th grade class will be sponsoring our annual Fun Fair on Thursday, May 24th. The event will take place from 1-2:30 in the Church parking lot.  It will be an afternoon of games, music, and refreshments.  The cost is $5, to be paid by Wednesday, May 23rd.  All preschool students are welcome to attend. If your child is in half day preschool, please accompany them for the afternoon.

Attached is the June Special Lunch order form and information about Nelson's BBQ.

Our preschool programs continue to grow and expand. Next year we will be offering 5 full days of 3 year old preschool.  Please help us to spread the word about this new program offering.

Congratulations to Jake Nicastro, who qualified for the Philadelphia CYO Archdiocesan Track Championship in the 1600 meters in the track meet yesterday.  He will represent St. Bernadette's in the race at Franklin Field on June 2.

We have received a number of requests for admission into grades K-8.  If you have not yet registered for next year, please do soon as soon as possible.

God bless you,
