How are birthdays celebrated in Room 5?

Every child loves to celebrate their birthday. I make a special
point to
assign a special day for children with summertime birthdays.
Please feel
free to send in individual treats for the class.(no whole cakes
or quarts of water ice) (20 students, if you choose to send
in cupcakes or cookies, please also send in napkins!) The
children will be
given a homework pass to use for 1 written assignment of thier
choice, I
also acknowlegde their Baptism day with a homework pass.

Water Bottles?

Research shows that keeping the brain hydrated is important to
helping the
students learn, so I encourage you to send your child with a
small 8oz water
bottle (sports tops only!!! to reduce spills!!)

Book Clubs?

This is it! "Leaders are Readers!" If your child is not hooked on
reading
2nd & 3rd grades are the best times to help them catch the fever!
Book club
orders will be sent out monthly. Any time you order I earn points
to order
supplies for the classroom. I can only accept checks make out to
the book
company directly. (no cash!) Participation in the book clubs is
not maditory, the free library of Philadelphia is also an
excellent source for books for your child.

Will the children have homework on the weekends?

I believe weekends are family time, however we cannnot forget all
the
blessings that God has been so good to give us. Therefore each
weekend the
children should attend Mass, especially since we are preparing to
recieve 2
sacraments this year. Also, since I am a firm believer in helping
the
children to be strong readers they are required to read 10 mins
each day.
Very rarely will I ever schedule a test on a Monday, but it does
happen
sometimes, I will give you plenty of notice.

Each students needs to bring to school 4 used tennis balls with a
slit cut in
the top of them. These are placed on the feet of the student
cahirs. They are
a big help with noise reduction in the classroom and heps to keep

Vacation?

If you are planning on taking a vacation during the school year
(or even if your child is sick for a few days,) here is the
information you need to know. If you are going away on vaction,
then take the time to enjoy your time with your child. The missed
school work will be here when you get back. I make sure to take
detailed notes recording all of the work that has been missed. Is
your child misses 5 days of school, it's going to take them 5
days to catch up with the missing material. If you don't want
your child to fall behind there are a few things they can do.
1. Read, read , read!! at least 10 minutes each day.
2. You always have the whole unit of spelling words, review.
3. Flash cards for math facts: addition, subtraction, time &
money.
4. Write a journal about your adventures! Be prepared to share
all the exciting thisngs you experience with the class when you
get back to school.
It is not school policy to send work home ahead of time (please
refer to the student handbook available on-line) But using the
few suggestions above will help to keep your child in "school
mode."
