Dear Parents,
Sorry this letter is a little later than usual. Thank God most of our
children are back. We had only two out today. Again, please do not try to
catch up with all the work in one night. Take this whole week to finish up
whatever was missed.
Our class trip to the farm is tomorrow. Please have the children in gym
uniform and send lunch in a paper bag with a disposable drink. We are
looking forward to a great day and it looks like the weather will cooperate
as well.
If any child misses the trip tomorrow we can refund the cost of the admission
to the farm but not the cost of the bus since that cost is divided among the
whole grade and chaperones. Thank you for your understanding about this.
I am NOT sending the test folder home tonight since we had very few formal
assessments last week. It was a good week to sit with the children and
see some of their strengths and weaknesses and work on that. We are back on
schedule this week and starting The Farmer in the Hat today.
Friday is National Teddy Bear Day and the children may bring in their
favorite teddy bear--yes, even if it's very big! (That's usually the first
question.) We have a few teddy bear activities planned for this day so it
should be a fun learning day for all.
Have a good week and stay healthy everyone.

***We have a number of children out this week. If your child is sick, please
do not worry about school work. Get your child better and I will work with
your child when he/she returns to help them catch up. I will send home some
papers that will need to be done over the next few days. Do not do all the
work in one evening. Since Peer Helpers is starting this week--(info on that
below)--they are a good resource to help your child when they are well
again. Bottom line is get your child well and together we'll deal with the
missed work when they return.***
What is the Peer Helper Program?
Here are some of the details about the Peer Helper/Reading Team Program. The
eighth grade Helpers come down during their lunch period to work with the
children. It is right after our lunch period and the whole class participates
receiving either tutoring or enrichment. It will be a part of our Thursday
schedule and no one is missing class time. In the past, the children have
developed a nice rapport with the older students and benefited from this
extra assistance. Eve gives the helpers some pointers in dealing with the
children and either Eve or I will be in the room with the children at all
times. I hope this has cleared up any questions. If you would like to talk
further about this, please contact me and I will call you so we can discuss
it or you can call Eve in the Cora room.

Dear Parents,
As a Halloween TREAT from our principals, the children may have a dress-down
day tomorrow, Monday. This is a nicer treat than candy for a Monday!
Thank you so much to everyone that came out for our Halloween Celebration.
If you were there, you saw how much fun the children had and if you were not
with us, I'm sure you already heard all about our day. Thank you for giving
your time and your treats so generously.
It was fun to see so many of you on Halloween night at my house. I'm so glad
the rain didn't dampen the spirits of the Trick or Treaters.
Because of our Halloween Celebration, the children did not go to Library last
week. We may have a make-up day and I'll let you know if/when that is. This
week we have Fine Arts on Monday, Computer on Wednesday, Gym on Thursday and
Library on Friday. Our schedule will probably be this way until Thanksgiving
because the Letter Days only change when we have days off or we skip a Letter
Day. So this will pretty much be the schedule for the next few weeks.
We are not starting a new story this week so that we can review skills and
finish up any activities that were interrupted because of Spirit Day and
Halloween. We also have a few reading assessments to give the children and
that will be this week. A good thing to do during this week would be to
make sure your child knows all the words from the Heart Copybook on the
reading side and to review short vowels sounds with them.
Children may continue to wear Phillies gear any day the Phillies are playing
but it doesn't look as though our room needs reminders about that. :)
There was a letter sent home on Friday about the H1N1 virus being diagnosed
in our school. Please check the red take-home folder for it if you didn't
see it yet. We are wiping down desks, chairs and doorknobs every day after
school. Please remind the children about the importance of coughing into
their elbow and about washing hands frequently. Some of the children have
hand sanitizer in their desks and they do use it throughour the day. If you
want to send a small bottle in with your child, that would be fine.
Have a great week and stay healthy.
