A mineral is a …..
NATURALLY OCCURING- a substance that is formed by processess of the natural
world
INORGANIC- this means the mineral can not come from materials that were once
part of a living thing
SOLID –a definite volume and shape
CRYSTAL STRUCTURE- a repeating pattern of mineral’s particles form a crystal
DEFINITE CHEMICAL COMPOSITION- this means that a mineral always contains
certain elements in definite proportions
Each Mineral has characteristic properties that can be used to identify it..
COLOR
STREAK- the color of a minerals powder
LUSTER- the term used to describe how light is reflected form a mineral’s
surface
DENSITY- density is the mass in a given space
HARDNESS- Moh’s Hardness Scale
CLEAVAGE- a mineral that splits easily along flat surfaces
FRACTURE- describes how a mineral looks when it breaks apart in an irregular
way
