The major thrust of the physical education program at St. Christopher
School is the teaching of self-respect, respect for others, and a greater
appreciation of God-given abilities. All students are encouraged to perform
to the best of their ability in a spirit of cooperation.
It is a proven fact that a large percentage of the children today are
not physically fit. We here at St. Christopher School care about our
students, and we will be working very hard in the development of their
physical, as well as spiritual, fitness. At the beginning of the school year,
all students will complete a physical fitness test, and then work throughout
the year on improving basic skills. This same test will be repeated at the
end of the school year. Hopefully, we will see great improvement.
The following areas are covered during physical education class:
1. Formation
This includes prayer, taking roll, and checking for proper
preparation for class. Students should wear gold t-shirts, green warm-up
pants/shorts (allowing for weather), and white sneakers. Socks must be worn
above the ankle. Beginning in October, green sweatshirts should also be worn.
Due to safety issues, no earrings should be worn in gym class. Students must
wear the regulation gym uniform only on their assigned gym day.
2. Safety
By following a few safety precautions, we can have a successful year
without accidents. Please check your child's sneakers for proper fit. Also,
please see that your child's shoelaces are tied; no child will be permitted
to participate in gym with untied sneakers as this is a safety hazard. Hair
should also be pulled away from the face to allow for clear vision.
3. Discipline
Remember to keep hands, feet, and objects to yourself. The practice
of self-control is a very important aspect of physical development.
It is also essential that all students demonstrate good sportsmanship by
showing respect and support for their classmates during participation in all
activities.
4. Warm-up
This lasts approximately 5 to 10 minutes, consisting of stretching
exercises, push-ups, sit-ups, and jogging. Every class begins with warm-up
activities to prevent injuries during the session.
5. Skill Development
These activities include ball bouncing, skipping, jumping, etc. It
incorporates movement games all year round. During team sport activities,
students work on the skills necessary to play the games.
6. Culminating Activities
This would be games utilizing the skills which were used in the
development time.
7. Cool Down
This would include light stretches, followed by questions on health.
8. Being Excused from Class
To excuse a child from gym class, a note must be written by the
parent or doctor.
9. Health Status
Please inform me of any health problems (e.g., asthma, allergies.
etc.)
10. Grading System
50% Attitude and responsibilities (proper uniform, participation, and
attendance)
25% Knowledge (Knowing rules and strategies as shown in
game situations)
25% Ability (Skill shown in game situations)
We look forward to a great year!!
