Math

Review number facts on a daily basis (basic facts - addition and
subtraction - up to 20) drill, drill drill.

We will be conducting math drill tests on a weekly basis to sharpen the
childrens' skills. It is imperative that these facts become second nature
to the children so that we can build to the next level. You have the option
of drilling with flash cards or verbally.

We will also be studying money and clocks in second grade. Please continue
to use everyday activities to review time and money. Don't be
afraid to challenge your children in these topics...i.e. What time is it
now? How much change do I have? Do I have enough money to buy...? etc...

The children will also be introduced to geometric solids. They will learn to
recogize congruent figures and find the lines of symmetry. Fractions are
introduced with the concept of equal parts, and halves, thirds, fourths, up
to tenths are studied.

As we move into the last Trimester we will be working on 2 and 3 digit
subtraction of numbers. They will be studing both customary and metric
measurements. They will be measuring objects to the nearest inch or
centimeter. They will be able to identify containers that hold more or less
than a cup, pint, quart, or gallon.

In Chapter 10 the children will model and describe multiplication and
division situations using manipulatives. Many times the children are
reminded they already know how to count by 2's, 5's and 10's. They also
practice division among groups of different sizes, with and without
leftovers.

Towards the end of the year the children will be studing numbers through
1000. They will also compare 3-digit numbers using less than and greater
than symbols.
