NEW Grading Policy

HONORS MATH

GRADING POLICY

And Other Things to Know

September 2007

Students in this program are expected to perform at a higher level, and, as always, to be conscientious regarding class and home assignments.

Tests (30% of Trimester Grade)

·         There will be 2 to 6 tests each trimester.  Projects will also be given.  These will count as a test grade.  I anticipate 1 project per trimester.  Students will be given around a month to complete these projects.  Class time for working on projects is not guaranteed.

·         Fourth and Fifth grades will be given Multiplication quizzes at different times during the first and second trimesters.  At the end of each trimester, these quizzes will count as a test grade.

Math Maintenance (20% of Trimester Grade)

·         Math Maintenances are math problems made up by the Archdiocese.  These problems include skills learned since Kindergarten.  My goal is to have students complete 5 to 8 Math Maintenances each trimester.

Quizzes (20% of Trimester Grade)

·         Quizzes will be given randomly throughout the trimesters.  Quizzes will be used to check the understanding before a test.

Participation (15% of Trimester Grade)

·         Students are expected to participate in class each day.

·         Copybook (10 points per check, up to 4 checks per trimester)

o        Notebooks will be collected and checked during tests (your teacher has to have something to do while you take your test!).  They will be checked for neatness and quality of notes, with suggestions offered if there are significant problems.  The class will determine how notebooks are graded (rubric).

Homework and Assignment/Preparedness (15% of Trimester Grade)

·         All students will begin each trimester with 100%.  Students will lose points if they do not come to class prepared and do not have their homework completed.

o        -3 Points        Homework is incomplete

o        -1 Point          Unprepared for class

·         Students are expected to complete their homework everyday.  Those who do not complete their assignment will lose points and are expected to make up the assignment. They will also be responsible for filling out a Late Assignment Form and returning the form the next day signed by a parent/guardian.

·         Be prepared for class: textbook, workbook, copybook, folder, calculator, ruler, pencil, pen, homework, and dry erase marker.

·         A few examples of being unprepared for Honors Math class:  A student who forgot the textbook at home or in their homeroom.  A student who left their homework in their homeroom or at home.

·         Those students who do not come to class prepared will complete an Unprepared for Class Form.  Students who continual arrive to class unprepared will spend lunch/recess in the Honors Math classroom.

·         Not completing assignments and not coming to class prepared is unacceptable.

Lunch and Learning

·         Wednesdays throughout the school year, students in the Honors Math Program may come to the classroom at lunchtime for extra help.  This is a time that can be used as extra help with me or to play math games to reinforce different skills. Of course, students may come to me at lunchtime any day of the week if they need help.

Honors Math Website

·         Do not rely on the Honors Math website for homework assignments.  Students are expected to write down assignments in class.
