STATE IN A BOX 1. How to decorate the box a. The box will be covered with the colors of your state’s flag. Use whatever material you want. (construction paper, wrapping paper, etc.) Cover the top and bottom separately so that you can remove the top. b. Top of the box i. Name of state so that it can be clearly seen (This can be done with the computer or stick-on letters. If you print it freehand make sure that letters are very neat and in a straight line.) ii. Hand-drawn map with capital marked, major landforms, and waterways. iii. Your name needs to be at one of the corners, easily seen. 2. Sides of the box It doesn’t matter which side you use as long as you have the information required. But, be sure that the lid doesn’t cover any of your work. a. side – pictures of state items labeled (bird, flower, tree, animal) at least five items b. side – pictures of 3 famous people with their names and 1 or 2 sentences as to why they are famous. c. side – pictures of 2 industries and 2 agricultural products with labels d. side – use this side for something you found very interesting that you would like to share with the class (It could be a food or a holiday or a tradition or something else you really enjoyed reading about.) 3. Use an old white or light colored t-shirt. The best drawing material to use would be fabric paint . Make a collage on the front and back of the t-shirt of items about your state. Have at least three items on both sides. It could be landmarks, people, industries, events, etc. Be sure to label what you have drawn. You will wear this when you give your presentation. 4. Inside the box have 5 index cards each with an interesting or unusual fact about your state. The format would be – “Did you know that……..” a. Also in the box have some simple snack made from an agricultural product grown in your state that can be shared with your classmates. Just remember that we are peanut-free. (If this becomes a problem we’ll have to come up with something else.) b. Any photographs, postcards, souvenirs, etc. could also be in the box so that you can pull them out and share them with us. The information required for each side should be typed and neatly glued to each side of the box. If it would make your work stand out, you could back it with construction, just stay in the color scheme of your state colors.
