*To those who order from the Scholastic Book order you're books are coming,
soon I hope. We placed the order before Columbus Day, they said we should
have had the items by the 20th, but we never got them so they had to reship
everything. Here's hoping they'll be here in the next day or 2. Sorry for
the delay!
*It's Thanksgiving time which means it's time to put up and decorate the
tepee! Mrs. Lytz and I are looking for volunteers to help on Thursday,
November 12th from 1:20 till the end of the day. If anyone is available and
interested please let me know. (All who help get to put their handprint on
the tepee as well!)
*Please keep encouraging donors to send in their Walk-a-thon donations. Our
class only needs about $700 to reach our class goal of a little over $5,600.
We'll receive a free ice cream treat from Mr. Frosty if we make it!
November 3, 2009
Hello everyone. I can't believe it's November! This Friday marks the end of
the 1st quarter. Your children are just about one fourth of the way through
1st grade already! Time really does fly. We've been working hard in first
grade. In reading all the groups will have finished and moved on to a new
reading book by the end of the week. Please continue to really study sight
vocabulary at home every night. Don't forget to review words from previous
stories and books. They will forget if they don't see the words for a
while! In spelling we've already moved on to short i words. Don't forget
that short a words will still appear on the spelling quizzes. They are
cumulative! We are of course also doing short i in phonics. Have your child
practice reading and writing word fmailies (-ig, -in, etc.) at home. I don't
know if your child has told you or not, but we finally recieved 2 more of our
text books. We now have one Phonics and 1 English book. Still waiting for
one more Phonics book and reading workbooks, but they should arrive shortly!
In math class we've wrapped up our unit on addition, however this does not
mean the children whould stop practicing them at home. I was just talking to
one of the second grade teachers today and she was telling how the don't
teach addition in 2nd grade. They review for about a week and that's it. So
they children really must have their facts memeorized! I can't stress this
enough! Okay, I'm done making that point now. Over the next couple of days
we'll be working on picking out and completing patterns with numbers.
Basically the children need to be able to determine if it's counting by 2s,
5s, or 10s. Then next week we'll begin subtracting! In English we're
working on puncuation and capitalization as well as sentence structure. And
finally in Social Studies we've been talking about Native Americans and will
move on to Pilgrims this week.
Have a great evening!
Miss Rundle
