Sustaining Engineering and the Sciences Award 2009
Guidelines: 

In an attempt to promote and maintain interest in engineering and the sciences, the Pittsburgh Post 
will present a continuing education award to deserving individuals to attend the Air Force 
Construction Camp in Colorado, and the Navy Construction Camp in California. In addition, the 
scholarship winners may select the U.S. Space Camp in Huntsville Alabama or the Kennedy Space 
Center in Florida. The curriculum is the same at each location and each camp is located adjacent to 
major NASA centers: Huntsville, Alabama trainees see the Marshall Space Flight Center and Florida 
trainees visit the Kennedy Space Center.  A $400 transportation allowance will be awarded. The 
student’s parents must make the travel arrangements.

Candidate application for the award will be based upon Post Sponsorship and references.  

The candidate must be a student attending junior high school or high school and in the ninth grade 
or higher.

Through application to the post, the candidate must show academic proficiency in math and science. 
Send a school transcript with your application. Other information to be gathered by application 
includes:

• Listing of extracurricular activities demonstrating commitment to, and involvement in community 
activities.
• Demonstration of spirit, attitude, and leadership qualities.
• Demonstration of desire to pursue a career in engineering or the sciences.
• Explanation of why the scholarship would be beneficial to his/her future plans. For the Air Force 
Camp, you must indicate an interest in attending a Service Academy.
• Explain what you do with your time while you are not in school.

Candidate must live in the Pittsburgh Post area and cannot win in successive years.

*WISE Camp 2009
    WISE Camp is a weeklong camp for young women interested in science, technology, engineering 
and mathematics (STEM) fields as careers and college majors.
It is open to young women entering grades 11 or 12. For more information see Mrs. Greco's bulletin

*Thirtieth Annual Pittsburgh Chemistry Olympics....
We are invited to bring a team to the Chemistry Olympics. (April 29) If you are interested, please see 
Mrs. Greco as soon as possible.

*We are looking for a few students who want to make a big difference. The Department of Biological 
Sciences, University of Pittsburgh invites motivated and creative high school biology students to 
apply to join the GENE TEAM, a program designed to bridge current research with the high school 
classroom. Composed of research and educational components, this program blends our strengths 
by generating novel, inquiry-driven science education from current health-related research.

*ESSAY CONTEST / PENNSYLVANIA SOCIETY FOR BIOMEDICAL RESEARCH
  - OPEN TO ALL PENNSYLVANIA STUDENTS IN GRADES 9 - 12
  - $2,050 in Prizes - 6 Finalists
  - PURPOSE:  To recognize students who demonstrate a superior understanding of the appropriate
                      use of animals in biomedical research and who can artfully communicate that 
                      understanding in writing.
   - Rules and Regulations

          1. The entry shall consist of an essay in standard English, typed on 8 1/2" x 11" paper, not 
          exceeding 750 words or three double-spaced pages on the topic:  "Why Are Animals Used in 
          Biomedical Research?"

          2. Page margins should be one inch on all sides.

         3. A cover sheet must be submitted with the essay containing:

          (a) student's name and grade     (b) home address                   (c) home telephone number

          (d) name of school                       (e) school address                 (f) school telephone number

          (g) teacher's name and class       (h) name and address of local newspaper

         4. The student's name should appear on the cover page only.

         5. To enter, send three (3) copies of your essay to Pennsylvania Society for Biomedical 
             Research, C/O Essay Contest, P.O. Box 1163, Camp Hill, PA 17001-1163.

         6.  ENTRIES MUST BE POSTMARKED NO LATER THAN MARCH 9, 2009.

         7.  All entries will be judged on originality, creativity, command of the English language and 
              understanding of the basic reasons animals are used in research.

        8. All entries become the property of the Pennsylvania Society for Biomedical Research.

        9.  Previous first place winners are not eligible.

    - AWARDS                               

         1. Two finalists, "Grand Award Essayists," will receive $500 awards.

         2. Three finalists will each receive a $250 award.

         3. One finalist will be awarded $300 in the category of "Creative Writing."

   - Special Note:
      The grand award essayists and the top creative writing prize essayist, his/her parents and 
      teacher will be invited, at PSBRÕs expense, to attend PSBRÕs annual dinner in May of 2009.  

   - Winners will be notified by June 1, 2009.

*SJHS students have been invited to participate in La Roche's first annual science fair on March 20, 
2009 from 12-4 PM.  For more information, check the bulletin board in Mrs. Greco's lab. 
This is an extra credit opportunity.


*High school science teachers and their best and brightest science students are invited to participate 
in the Forty-fifth annual Pennsylvania Junior Science and Humanities Symposium (PJSHS), to be held 
March 22 -24, 2009, at Penn State University Park. 

The purpose of PJSHS is to seek talented youth and to encourage the development of their scientific 
interests and abilities. 

Outstanding science students may present either a paper or poster or simply attend the presentation 
sessions. Scholarships will be awarded to the first-, second-, and third-place winners. The first- and 
second-place winners will be invited to present their papers at the National Junior Science and 
Humanities Symposium.  This would be a great opportunity for someone to present their PJAS or 
PRSEF project.

Lodging and most meals are paid by PJSHS, so the registration fee is only $65 per student or teacher 
participant. 

The deadline to apply is February 6, 2009.

*The Intel International Science and Engineering Fair (ISEF) is the Olympics, the World Cup and the 
World Series of science competition. Held annually in May, ISEF brings together more than 1,500 
students from 50 states and 50 nations to compete for over $1 million in scholarships, tuition 
grants, internships, scientific field trips and the grand prize: a trip to attend the Nobel Prize 
Ceremonies in Stockholm, Sweden. 
As the only local ISEF-affiliated Fair, PRSEF will nominate up to four Senior Division students to 
attend ISEF. These students will win an all-expenses-paid trip to compete at ISEF on May 10-15, 
2009, in Reno, NV. Since 2002, PRSEF students have won over $75,000 at ISEF in cash prizes, 
scholarships and trips.

*Lab Safety Video
    Students are asked to make a video that can be used to demonstrate good lab safety practices.
    Students may work alone or in groups no larger than five people.
    If the video is good enough to be used in next year's classes, students can earn up to 25 
    extra credit points.




Registration is at 6:15PM each evening. The workshop will begin promptly at 6:30PM.
