Mission
Biology Biology is a junior level lab-oriented course which explores life at all levels, from molecules and cells to ecosystems and the biosphere. General topics include the chemistry of life, the cell, the evolutionary history of biological diversity, plant and animal form and function, and ecology. Ten themes in the study of life are emphasized throughout the course. A weighted grade is available. Weighted Chemistry Chemistry is a sophomore level lab-oriented course with an emphasis on the development of problem solving skills. The curriculum includes the concepts of measurement, atomic structure, chemical periodicity, chemical bonding, molecular geometry, quantum chemistry, and principals of chemical reactivity. Emphasis is placed on properties, reactivities, and reactions in relation to periodic properties. Stoichiometry, thermodynamics, and solution chemistry are presented. Properties of matter as solids, liquids, or gases are studied in a practical hands-on manner using common materials. Safety and basic laboratory skills are emphasized in microscale exercises that are applications of the lecture material. Genetics The goal of this one semester senior level lab-oriented course is to provide students with an essential understanding of genetics so they will be informed citizens with the abilty to address social and ethical issues. Topics include the cell cycle, human reproduction, Mendelian Genetics, the chromosomal and molecular basis of inheritance, transcription and translation, microbial models, the organization and control of eukaryoticgenomes, DNA technology, and the mechanisms of evolution. A special feature of this class includes participation in the GENA project which has enabled the establishment of a collaboration with Dr. Jeremy Martinson from the University of Pittsburgh. Dr.Martinson works with the students in collaboration with Mrs. Greco for a period of two to three weeks. A weighted grade is available.
