Just a note:
We will try to get outside everyday for morning and lunch recess, at least
for a short while. Please be sure your child has a warm coat, hat and
gloves. Thank you!
December 9:
This is a short week, and next week is, believe it or not, our last full week
of the year! On Monday (Dec. 14) we will celebrate mass at 10 AM. Please
join us if you can. We will also distribute report cards that day. On
Thursday (Dec. 17) we'll have rehearsal for our Christmas program and then
perform for parents and friends at 7:00 that evening. Children should arrive
in the classroom between 6:30 and 6:45. On Monday, Dec. 21 we will once again
make lunches for the homeless who seek shelter in the St. Agnes Dayroom.
Thank you for your donations to this project. Mrs. Carter has volunteered to
help take the lunches to St. Agnes for us. We will have our class Christmas
party on Tuesday, Dec. 22 from 1:15 until 2:15 PM. Wednesday the 23rd is a
half day (dismissal at 11:30 AM). On that day, we'll do some Christmas
activities, stay calm, and remember the true meaning of Christmas.
We will also try to stay focused on our studies during this time of
excitement. We will have a regular spelling test this Friday (Dec. 11) and
next Friday (Dec. 18). On Wednesday, Dec. 16 the students will take a
cumulative Chapters 1 through 3 math test. We will also begin our timed time
tables tests. (The students have been practicing these tables for months
now.) The schedule is as follows: 2X table, tomorrow (Dec. 10); 5X table,
Tuesday, Dec. 15; 9X table, Tuesday, Dec. 22. Each student repeats each
time table test until he or she "passes" (makes no more than one error on a
set of 20 computations). We will continue with the other multiplication
tables shortly after Christmas vacation, approximately one table a week in
this order: 3, 4, 6, 7, 8. Each table gets easier, since there are fewer new
equations to learn. Please remember: it is important to MEMORIZE the
tables. It's the only way to be efficient when multiplying bigger numbers,
and it's also necessary for dividing.
I wish you peace and happiness in these last days of Advent and during the
Christmas season. Thank you for all you do for me and for the children.
P.S. It's been a very sniffle-y year so far. We are down to our last few
boxes of tissues. Could you please add a box or two to your Christmas list?
Thank you so much!

ordinal numbers. We will also have our routine spelling test (30 words).
Looking ahead -- We are hoping to be ready for our second ILA benchmark test

2
Faculty meeting on Monday, Nov. 9 -- No school for students
October 14, 2009
We are set for our field trip on November 2. Almost all the money and
permissions are in -- if you've forgotten, please send yours in as soon as
possible. Our chaperones for this trip are Mrs. Bucci, Mrs. Carter, Mrs.
Duggan, and Mrs. Falkenstein. Thank you to all who volunteered to
chaperone. Hopefully, we can catch you in the spring.
Next week on Tuesday (Oct. 20) we will have a religion unit test. The
children should be bringing their religion books home each night to review
Chapters 1 through 5. Please know that we are also reviewing in class. On
Wednesday (Oct. 21) we'll be having an ILA unit test. You can help your
child review for this test by going over the skills we have covered in the
practice book, the grammar skills in the grammar book, and the rules for
spelling and phonics in the spelling book. We will also be reviewing in
class on Monday and Tuesday.
Thank you for all your help. Have a good day off tomorrow while the teachers
attend an inservice at Cardinal O'Hara High School. Enjoy your hopefully-not-
too-wet weekend.
Week of Oct. 5:
This week on Thursday (Oct. 8) we will be having a math test on graphs and
the multiplication that we have done so far. Use the homework pages to
practice and review. Also, please continue to work on the addition and
subtraction math facts. We are improving but still need lots of practice!
You should have received the information for our first field trip -- check
those take-home folders! Please return the permission forms and the money by
Friday, Oct. 9. I will let you know about the chaperones when the forms are
returned. Also, if you have not yet sent in your stationery money, please
send it in as soon as possible.
On Monday, Oct. 5 I will send home the information about our conference day
on October 27. Please return your preference as soon as possible. The
kindergarten through third-grade teachers will coordinate your conferences
for siblings as best we can.
Thank you for all the help you have given your children and me to make the
beginning of school go smoothly.
Week of Sept. 21:
Our first week of school went well. We worked hard and also enjoyed some
new, exciting experiences, such as our first Spanish class! We had a visitor
to our Thursday religion class: Mr. Santiago Mariani, a seminarian from St.
Charles whose home diocese is Charlotte, North Carolina. Mr. Mariani will
join us every Thursday for religion this year. We look forward to his input
and insights.
We have just spent a week learning the concept of multiplication. (This is
an ongoing process.) Soon we'll start memorizing the times tables. I know
that many of the children have gotten a head start on this. This also will
be an ongoing assignment throughout the year -- practicing the times tables.
Besides the times tables, simple math facts -- addition and subtraction --
need to be practiced daily (for example: 17-9=8, 14-8=6, 7+9=16). We will be
drilling on these every day this year. I'll explain further at the Back-to-
School night.
I look forward to seeing all of you then -- Monday, September 21 at 6:45
PM.
