Homework

Third-grade students are responsible for copying assigned homework daily from
the board into their green homework books. Please sign your child's homework
book each night, indicating that you have seen and checked the assignments.
If your child -- or you -- has any problem with the homework, please write a
note so that I can go over the work with him or her.

The family religion pages will come home about once a week, and it is hoped
that you will read the pages with your child and maybe do one of the
suggested activities with your family. This will not be checked on at
school.

As we finish each chapter in religion, we do the chapter review at school.
When we finish the whole unit, the students will use the chapter reviews to
study for the unit test. You will have plenty of notice for the test, and we
will also spend time reviewing in school.

We will have a spelling test ABOUT every five school days. Every spelling
test will include the twenty new words studied and ten words from previous
lessons. This will help keep up spelling skills, ensure that our words are
used correctly in our writing, and make the end-of-year spelling test much
easier. (The challenge words will be included in the weekly test but will
not be used as review words.) I suggest that you keep a record of the words
your child gets incorrect on each test. Words that are frequently misspelled
by several students will keep showing up on future tests.

I will send home a family page for language arts when we start each new
reading story. The family page tells you the theme of our readings for that
week, what grammar and comprehension skills we are working on, and the
vocabulary words for that lesson. There is also space for listing the
spelling words. Perhaps you could keep a folder of these pages, and then you
would have all spelling and vocabulary words in one place.
