Announcements

I will be sending home assessments next week. Anything given before 12/4 is
a part of the first trimester, and anything after 12/4 is part of the second
trimester. All grades have been posted on-line.

Believe it or not, we are running very low on some classroom supplies.
Donations of any of the following are greatly appreciated:

glue sticks
scissors

THANK YOU!!!

We've been talking quite a bit about the "Swine Flu" and how to keep the
students of St. Thomas safe and healthy. Each day we visit the restroom and
wash our hands with plenty of soap and water just before lunch. We also have
2 bottles of hand sanitizer in our room, and we clean our desks frequently.
Have you considered sending hand sanitizing wipes in your child's lunch? I
see some of my students already have them- what a wonderful idea! They are
individually wrapped sanitizing wipes.

Dear Parents,

We are pleased to announce that this year we will be using the Simple
Solutions approach to teaching English grammar and writing mechanics. Simple
Solutions enhances learning through structured and consistent review.
Students will retain what they have learned when they are required to
practice skills every day. This consistent review will allow students to
master basic grammar and spelling rules and these will be applied to daily
writing examples as well. Since students are reviewing English skills
consistently on a nightly basis, teachers can use valuable class time to
instruct students in areas such as the reading process, literature and
writing applications. This proficiency will extend to writing in the content
areas, letters and reports, as well as the use of correct grammar when
speaking.

Each day we will begin class by checking homework from the night
before. Immediately after checking, we will go over any items in the
homework which were done incorrectly or were confusing to students. Then we
will use the rest of the class period to learn new material and/or practice
reading, grammar, and writing skills that are taught at our grade level. In
addition to the nightly Simple Solution pages, there may be homework in
writing, reading, vocabulary, spelling and religion. Each student must do a
Simple Solutions lesson each night, Monday through Thursday. There are 140
lessons in the student book. The Simple Solutions homework should take your
child 10 minutes or less to complete. At the end of each week, a review quiz
will be given. The quiz items will be taken from the week’s work.

You can help guarantee your child’s success by lending support to
complete the nightly homework. Please refer to the Help Pages in the back of
the student book.

We appreciate your partnership in providing an excellent Language
Arts program and we look forward to exceptional growth in your child’s
literacy as a result of our commitment to this method of instruction.
