So far this year we have learned a lot in art and have created some awesome
pieces!

My little friends in Kindergarten have learned how to draw a self portrait,
learned about artist Piet Mondrian and his favorite colors - RED Yellow and
Blue (the primary colors), created a rainbow collage so that
we always remember the colors in the color wheel and their order. We also
learned Mrs. Q's favorite Rainbow song that even the 7th graders will
remember, they learned about complimentary colors by making blobber
bugs out of blobs of primary color paint, and arwe now exploring Monet's
famous gardens and lilly pads - we have FUN!!!!

1st grade has had fun we drew a landscape, created baskets of apples, learned
about warm and cool colors made fabulous Renaissance Angels, drew a portrait
of MLK and just finished our adorable penguins. We got ready for the
Archdiocese art festival by creating awesome Greek vases and are now
currently learning about Vincent Van Gogh and his beautiful Sunny Sunflowers.

2nd Graders are awesome they made these really cool witches legs - made us
think of the wizard of oz, made some landscapes and scarecrows, created
Pointallism painting like Seurat, learned about Russian nesting dolls
called Matroyshka's, created Pop art Hearts (just in time for
Valentine's Day) and are now re-creating their own Starry Night.

3rd grade is unbelievable artists, they started off the year with everyone's
favorite lesson Picasso witches, from there we moved on to making leaf
prints, Free drawn owls, worked on drawing a beautiful version
of the Holy family in the manner of art nouveau artist Gustav Klimt, and made
some hearts in the manner of Jackson Pollock. For the Archdiocese Art contest
our theme was Native American art so we made our own Thunderbirds out of
construction paper. Our current project is based on batik art - we learned
that in Mexican Cultures people believe that Monarch butterflies are their
loved ones visting them, we made ours using crayons and watercolors.

4th grade learned about the art of Batik and created their own out of paper,
crayon and watercolor. They then worked on a super fun project by
using plaster wrap to create a Native American Kachina doll, our next lesson
was for the Archdiocese art contest and was to make our own celtic
crosses. They are currently exploring the work of Pop artist Keith Haring, his
work is always a favorite of all students.

5th grade started off very zen like by creating a cool type of doodle art
called zentangles, they then became animators for the company Pixar - we even
took a virtual tour (what a cool place to work) and came up with their own
new monster for the Monsters inc. 2 that will be coming out next year. Next
we worked on our Arch. art contest project, out theme is South America so
we are going to be creating paper Molas, inspired by the fabric Molas that
the Kuna people of Panama are so well known for.We just finished our lesson
and it was inspired by our icomic Love Statue in Philadelphia by Robert
Indiana, we made our own version using paints and now we are currently
working on Op art in the manner of Bridget Riley.

6th graders loved their first lesson where they created decorative sugar
skull designs in honor of the mexican Holiday Dios de los muertos. They then
took on the job as illustrators and came up with a new cover
design for their favorite book.Persian Paisley designs were their next
challenge, they tackled portraits and are currenty learning to draw in the
manner of Georgia O'Keefe - SPRING IS IN THE AIR!!!!!!

7th grade is so Popular because of their incredible POP art! they learned
about artist Andy Warhol and created colorful images in multiples just like
he used to do! Their next project had them making these amazing tube like op
art - they are optical illusions that are so cool they need to be seen.We
explored another culture by creating Ming style vases out of
paper and painting flowers and are now creating collages just like Matisse.

8th Grade has the best work ever, after all this time at St. Thomas they
really do work independently and come out with some awesome work. Our first
project this year was our descriptive words design, every year the classes
get so creative. They then channeled their inner Klimt by using
scartchboard and magazine pictures to create an inceredible art nouveau
design. We just finished creating African inspired symmetrical masks and are
now beginning the famouse Chuck Close inspired collaged portraits!!!!!

Remember I am here for anything you may need - extra time for a project,
opinion on how to start building a high school portfolio or even just a
teacher to talk to if you have something going on in school!!!!
