Many parents ask why many of the projects that are created in class do not come home and there are 3 reasons why:
- I hold on to all of the projects with the exception of Kindergarten (they are too excited to show Mom & Dad's their work) until our Spring Art show. We usually have a planned project that each class completes special for the show, but accidents and absences happen and it is always great to have a back-up.
- In the past I have sent home projects only to see them crumpled up at the bottom of a backpack (my kids included). If we hold on to everything until the end of the year, the last art class we will have a bag or folder with everything we have done. I find that kids LOVE having this to look back on and it helps them appreciate their work and see what great artists they really are.
- Any 8th graders who are interested in taking art in High School need to have a portfolio, with our work at school we are able to pick pieces to add to previous work they have done.
As of 11/15 here is what has been worked on in class:
Kindergarten- We learned the Rainbow song, drew our 1st self portrait, made our own version of "Main Aux Fleur's" byVincent VanGogh, used our imagination by creating our own WILD THINGS and are learning our Primary colors with the help of Piet Mondrian .
1st Grade - We created Harvest Festival designs, made juicy baskets of apples, and started our self portraits.
2nd Grade - We created Harvest Festival designs, created beautiful fall trees with oil pastels, and now we are working on drawing a pumpkin patch using shading.
3rd Grade - We created Harvest Festival designs, created a spooky tree silhouette out of crayon and watercolors using distance, designed witches in the manner of Picasso and are now re-creating Henri Roussaeu's Jungle.
4th Grade - We created Harvest Festival designs, using a resist technique of oil pastels and watercolors we created Awesome all - American scarecrows, and just finished symmetrical faces in complementary colors.
5th Grade - We created Harvest Festival designs, and using paper plates and sharpies we created a really cool radial design using a balance of black and white lines and patterns., and now we are creating our own version of New Orleans artist George Rodrigue's "Why is Blue Dog Blue".
6th Grade - We created Harvest Festival designs, learned about the Mexican holiday "Dias de los Muertos" Day of the dead (wait until you see our designs, many of the kids based their work on relatives who have passed as a tribute), and now we are learning how to draw faces in proportion.
7th Grade - We created Harvest Festival designs, created a abstract design using tones and shading of color (they are awesome),and now we are creating beautiful watercolors of pumpkins using glue as a resist.
8th Grade - We created Harvest Festival designs, we illustrated objects with construction paper by only using the letters of the object (too difficult to explain - check out the gallery), and we are creating OP art illusion (like artist Bridget Riley) using only contour line drawings of our hands and lines - they are AMAZING when complete.
