Hi, I am Mrs. Martha Shields. I have taught at St. Thomas for 27 years. I
have taught 4th grade, Computers, Honors Math, 7th and 8th grades. I taught
for a while in St. Kevin's in Springfield where I had 5th and 6th grades.
I live in St. Thomas Parish. I have been a CYO member for 30 + years,
coaching basketball, volleyball, softball, and track. St. Thomas young
people are the best in the world!! (Well, I have 10 grandchildren who are the
best, but then they are my special ones!!!)
My husband and I visited Ireland, Scotland, and England in the summer of
2007 and had a great time . We saw the drama MacBeth in Stratford on Avon
in the Swan Theatre!
In 2008 we ventured to Alaska. My brother and sister-in-law lived in
a small village called Bethel. We took a cruise ship from Vancouver,
British Columbia to Whittier, a small town near Anchorage, Alaska, and were
met there to travel the "land" part of Alaska with my brother and sister-
in-law. We saw many different animals and land formations as we travelled .
I had heard that Alaska is beautiful - I got to see it first hand! Now my
brother/sister-in-law have returned to the "lower 48" and live
in Connecticut.
While in Alaska we rode in a helicopter to the Mendenhall glacier. We
walked on the glacier and were able to drink the glacial water. We went on
a Heritage Tour and saw how they made (and make) totem poles. Then we went
on a train to another section of Canada and into the Yukon. We spent 2 days
in Denali Park and saw a grizzly bear, some moose, a fox (with a rabbit in his
mouth), a caribou on the road, and an Arctic squirrel. Lots of learning on
this trip, and lots of fun too.
This summer (2009) my younger son was married on July 25th. It was great to
see so many family members at the wedding.
We went to Florida (won the auction at the St. Thomas Gala for a house near
Orlando). Our older son and his family were with us as we visited with
Mickey and Donald and Daisy for a few days! IT was HOT!!!but FUN!!!!

The Mission for our class is to develop each of our talents to the best that
we can be. And it is important to thank God each day for the talents that
He has given us.
