Supplemental Security Income (S.S.I.) is a federal program that 
makes monthly payments to individuals who have limited 
income and resources,if they are 65, blind, or have another 
disability.  A person receiving S.S.I. is eligible for a medical 
assistance card.  You may need to complete a separate 
application with the Department of Public Assistance (welfare), 
and select a managed care provider.

Requirements:
  - Disabled
    A child's impairment must result in "marked and severe
    functional limitations" and must be expected to last 12 months
  - Limited Income and Resources
    THE PARENT(S) HAS INCOME OR RESOURCES OR BOTH 
    AND THE CHILD IS UNDER AGE 18 AND LIVES AT HOME,
    THE PARENT'S INCOME MAY AFFECT WHETHER THE CHILD
    GETS S.S.I. AND HOW MUCH.
 
Student Earned Income Exclusion
  - As of January 2008, a student who regularly attends school
    (at least 12 hours a week)  and is under age 22 can earn up to 
    $6240 a year before any other exclusions are applied.

Social Security offers other 'Work Incentives".  These include:
  - Ticket to Work 
  - continued medical eligibility
  - Plan for Achieving Self Support (P.A.S.S.)
