June 2013
Dear Parent,
As a school we try to encourage and develop a love for reading in each of
the children in hopes of creating lifelong readers! In keeping with this
tradition, we want the students to continue reading during the
summer. Each student is required to read over the summer. Visit www.waldronmercy.org and click on the
tab for “Academics” then select “Homework Assignments” and click on any second
grade teacher. Follow the teacher web site to the summer reading link for a
suggested list of books for each grade level. Students may also choose books
that do not appear on the list.
Becoming a regular reader helps students see how effective stories are put
together and gives them a foundation to build on for their own
writing. Every student is required to complete the T-Shirt Project about
one of the books read over the summer.
On Friday, September 6th, Waldron Mercy will host a school-wide event, Snack
With Summer Reading! Every teacher and student will participate in a book
talk, sharing favorite stories read over the summer. We hope that the
excitement about literature is contagious!
Thank you for your support and
enthusiasm. Together we can provide a positive experience by reading and
responding to literature, building lifelong readers, and creating a storehouse
of language experiences.
Sincerely,
Nell Stetser
Principal
