10 Seminar Course description English 10 Seminar will utilize multiple texts(listed below), The Norton Anthology of Contemporary Fiction , and Philosophy & Literature. We will focus on many genres of literature: fiction, poetry, non-fiction, drama, and visual arts. The focus will be on the inner development of the individual in relationship to others and to his/her world. We will take a “Multi- approach” to this course – multi-disciplinary, multi-cultural, and multi- media. We will accomplish this goal through a focus on reading & writing (“Writing completes what reading begins”), speaking & listening, and utilizing different schools of literary criticism. 10 Standards The emphasis in this course is on literacy instead of literature. The course of study will focus on students’ present levels of reading comprehension and offer skill and strategy oriented instruction to work toward proficiency. Strategy instruction will help students who just read words learn to dig for layers of meaning, using quality literature of various genres by a wide range of authors. Topics focus on themes of identity, prejudice, and separateness. Students will read a whole-class novel followed by self- selected novels to read and discuss in structured Literature Circles. Writing will focus on further development of the writing process. Students will focus on developing paragraphs in the five-paragraph essay. Pre-and post-testing of reading and writing skills will occur. ****If you have a question about an assignment, please email me at mbonds@wcasd.net!
