Every student comes to the library with his/her homeroom class once a week.
Children are given time to exchange books each week that they come to the
library. During the week that the librarian is in the building, the
students, especially those in grades 2-5, will receive instruction in using
the library and its materials. Students learn about various authors and
illustrators, different genre of literature, how to use the online card
catalog, the Dewey Decimal system, and the steps in doing research, both
from print materials and online. When the library aide is supervising the
library, she usually reads and discusses a book with the students.
Students in grades K-2 are allowed one book a week. They may exchange their
book the following week or renew it. Students in grades 3-5 are allowed two
books out at time and the books are due in three weeks. Again, books may be
renewed if necessary. If students are assigned a book report or a research
project, a third book may be checked out. There is always a "date due" card
in the pocket of the book that has the due date stamped on it.
The elementary libraries do not charge fines for overdue books; however, we
encourage the students to be responsible in returning books in a timely
manner out of consideration for others. If a book should be lost or damaged,
please have your child alert the librarian or aide. Lost or damaged
materials do need to be paid for so that the library can replace them with
other copies if possible. Should you pay for a lost book and find it weeks
later, the library or the business office will refund your money. Debts can
be paid in cash or by check payable to the Dallas School District.
