Dallas School District Kindergarten Readiness Tasks
Here are some suggestions to help your child prepare for Kindergarten all of 
which can be worked on throughout the summer.

Some supplies needed are;
Pencil, crayons, safety scissors, alphabet flash cards, and number and domino 
flash cards

-Help your child to hold and use a pencil or crayon correctly to draw, trace, 
print, and color.
-Help your child name the letters of the alphabet. Have your child touch each 
letter and say the alphabet, rather than sing it.
-Make the letters and numbers from clay to help strengthen hand muscles.
-Play a matching game with the number and domino cards.
-Practice printing first name(upper case letters are fine right now).
-Make shapes for your child and have your child trace them with different 
color crayons.
-Make shapes with chalk on the driveway or on a slate.
-Do the same with your child’s name and with other letters and numbers.
-Make shapes on paper that your child can practice cutting out with safety 
scissors.
-Draw a series of lines across a paper for your child to cut. Or draw some 
simple curved or zig-zag lines for cutting on.
-Count pennies, buttons, toys, etc. to 10 and later to 20. Use the workmat as 
an aid, or use a ruler or calendar to help your child  point to and identify 
the numbers when counting.
-Play simple board games and card games. Use spinners and dice. Practice turn 
taking...waiting your turn.
-Read, Read and Read some more. Discuss the pictures and the story.   
-Practice sitting and listening to stories, nursery rhymes and fairy tales.
 -Practice proper bathroom manners,( boys lift the seat), flushing and good 
health practices...blowing your nose, using a tissue, not hands and fingers 
or clothes, proper hand washing, covering your mouth when sneezing or 
coughing.					
-Keep this list and check off what your child accomplished. He/ she can bring 
it to Kindergarten to show the teacher in the Fall.
Dallas School District Kindergarten Readiness Tasks List

The tasks attached are skills that children need before they come to 
Kindergarten. All are equally important.
The skills included are;
Fine Motor Skills - strengthening the muscles of the hand for later  printing 
and drawing.
Visual Perceptual Skills - Coordination of eye and hand activities for many 
activities used throughout the school year.
Reading Readiness and Language Skills
Numeration and Counting Skills
Math Skills for problem solving.
Large Motor Skills that help with coordination.
Social Skills to help all of us get along and learn good manners.
Self  Help Skills to help everyone be  healthy.
