Course Description:
This course includes the reading and analysis of American Literature from
the colonial days to the modern era, appreciating the connection between
social events and art. Students will examine and discuss various genre and
writing styles and work to develop their own voices. They will demonstrate
growth in literary, writing, and speaking skills by participating in
individual and group presentations, writings, and peer assessments.

Sources Used:
Text – Prentice Hall Literature, The American Experience
Supplemental - The Old Man and the Sea by Ernest Hemingway
Video Resources – The Crucible, Moby Dick, The Old Man and the Sea, United
       Streaming and A&E Biography
PSSA Reading Coach, Grade 11

Your grade will be calculated on a total point system (from all of the
following):
Tests and Quizzes
Projects, Reports, Presentations
Homework, Class Participation, and Attendance

Tests missed due to absence must be made up on the day the student returns.
The homework hotline advises students of tests, and there is no reason for
lack of preparation. All tests will be made up during a study hall and not
during class. In event of an illness of three days or longer, or a family
crisis causing an absence of three or more days, I retain the option of
allowing the student additional time to prepare. This is an option, not a
right of the student, and it will be decided on a case-to-case basis.

To receive full credit for homework, it must be turned in on the due date.
Approximately ten homework assignments will be checked over the course of
each marking period for a major grade (100 points). Sometimes I will let
students know when I am going to check homework but 75% of the time it is
done randomly.

Grading Scale:

A	100-95 C-	74-70
A-	94-90 D	69-65
B	89-85 F	64-0
B-	84-80
C	79-75

**There will be opportunities for extra credit. All students are encouraged
to take advantage of the opportunities when they arise.**
