Criteria for Music as Poetry Marking Period 2

All songs/lyrics must be approved by Mrs. Lynch. Lyrics must not conflict with school policy regarding drugs and alcohol.

Lyrics must be given to Mrs. Lynch the day before assigned presentation.

Students must find at least 6 elements from the Poetry terms notes as they pertain to particular words or stanzas.

Students will team teach the poetics aspects of the lyrics by asking questions to their classmates. Ex: In the first line, the words Peter and piper are obviously what literary device?

Max. time 10min lesson

Shakespeare Notes

born April 23, 1564

died April 23, 1616

English Renaissance= Elizabethan Era

Shakespeare was born in Stratford-on-Avon

His wife was Anne Hathaway. She was 26, he was 18 when they married.

They had three children: Suzanna, Judith and Hamnet.

Lord Chamberlain's Men(theatre company)

changed to The King's Men

Globe Theatre

"the O"

open air

daytime performances

"groundlings" stood on the ground in front of the stage

3 levels of stage for balcony scenes/under stage

2,500-3,000 people

2 HR plays

threw food at the actors if they didn't like it

All actors were men.

"box office" where patrons of the theatre dropped their admission fee

Three different colored flags were posted to tell what play was being performed:

Comedy- White

Tragedy- Black

History- Red

The theatre did not rely on many props, scenery or eleaborate costumes.

WORDS were used to tell. Did not rely on visual aids.

"It was a dark and stormy night." told the audience it was dark and stormy,

not special effects etc when a play was performed during the afternoon hours.

BLANK   VERSE   IS   UNRHYMED   IAMBIC   PENTAMETER!!

REAL   LIFE   VS   STAGE   LIFE

"if you don't hear it in the play, it doesn't exist!"

Characters are known by:

-what they say

-what others say about them

-what they do

-nothing from the outside was relevant, everything was within the play

Common Elizabethean Words

anon: soon

aye: yes

betimes: right now

e'en: even

e'er: ever

hence: away, from here

hie: hurry

hither: here

marry: indeed

prithee: pray thee

sooth: truly

withal: in addition

wont: accustomed

TRAGEDY

Tragedy

*a great work of art

*ennobles and uplifts the audience

*creates catharsis in the audience(a purging of emotions)

Tragic figures

*noble figures better than the average person

*they suffer a reversal of fortune

*they endure great suffering

*they recognize the consequences of their actions

TERRIBLE  BEAUTY: terrible-the extreme suffereing of the tragic figure

beauty- their dignity while suffering

Wheel of fortune: if a character is successful(at the top of the wheel), the wheel will turn and soon they will suffer from tragic events(at the bottom of the wheel)

EXTRA  CREDIT  20 pts.

-must be handed in by end of marking period April 1

-must be creative in nature ex. 3D Globe Theatre, Globe Theatre made from an edible substance, detailed drawing of the Shakesperaean theatre or a character(s) from JC, video of a scene using a modern setting but still using the original Shakesperean language(similar to the R and J with Leonardo Decaprio)or if you are musically inclined you may select a piece from the Shakesperean era and perform it for the class. You may work in a pair or group must the end result must warrant the extra credit.

-must be approved by Mrs. Lynch first!!

MARKING PERIOD  4

There is no extra credit in marking period 4. ALL students are required to complete all assignments for this marking period.
