NewsFlash

Welcome to a new school year! We will be doing a lot of exciting things this year in first
grade. We know your child will have a lot of fun as they learn.

I am committed to the importance of parental involvement. This is a vital part of first grade.
Please read the homework and discipline policies sent home with your child. If you have any
questions or concerns, please contact me. Also, go over these policies periodically with your
child so they are aware that we are working together to help them succeed in first grade.

Here are some of the activities we will be covering in the beginning of the school year:
Reading - The students will receive Back to School vocabulary words and will complete
activities as a review of skills learned in kindergarten. We will then begin Theme 1 - All
Together Now! Some of the skills that will be taught include sequence, compare and contrast,
cause and effect, beginning and ending sounds, and the short vowel sounds for "a" and "i".
Please remember to review the vocabulary words and workbook pages sent home each night.

Math - We have a new math series this year. The students will be working on numbers to 12,
comparing and ordering numbers, and understanding addition in the beginning of the year.
Quizzes and tests will be announced the day before so you can review with your child. Remember
to go over math papers sent home each night. Also, review addition and subtraction facts to
help prepare for fact quizzes beginning in October.

I look forward to working with you this year!
