Curriculum

Reading- For the next few weeks we will be enjoying the theme Around Town: Neighborhood and Community.

Math- We are beginning Topic 8. Help is always welcome from home by reviewing and practicing concepts taught daily in class. For added enrichment, follow the suggestions presented on the daily math pages that students bring home each day.

Writing Process- To help our class get to know each other, the students write and illustrate an All About Me story. We share our stories with the class and then make a class book. The book is added to our classroom collection of All About Me books written by my previous classes. All of the books are available to read at the student's leisure throughout the school year. We practiced the skill of story writing by following the writing process to write silly stories. Every story consisted of a beginning, middle, and end along with an illustration of the main character. Using our five senses, every student wrote a describtive story about a nature walk he/she has taken. Students will be writing a friendly letter to someone very important in the near future!

Cursive Writing- The time has arrived! Yes it is finally here! The moment we have all been waiting for... cursive writing. We will begin cursive writing during the month of January. The most important thing to remember is to keep the pacing with Mrs. Moore. The letters are presented according to stroke and not the sequencial order as they appear in the alphabet. Students will be taught the 26 lower case letters first and then the 26 capital letters. Please remember that this process is introduced in second grade with final mastery being accomplished in third grade. Patience and practice is the key to success in the learning of cursive writing so let's begin...
