How often is homework given?

Homework may be assigned Monday through Thursday. Homework is not
assigned on weekends or holidays. Homework is written on the
board, and your child should copy it into the planner. The
planner should come home every day.

How will I know if my child is not doing his/her homework?

A homework slip will be sent home with the missing assignments
listed. This work must be finished and handed in the next day,
along with the slip signed by you. If three homework slips are
given in one subject, your child will be assigned after-school
detention.

Why do I have to sign test papers?

I send home chapter tests in major subjects for your signature so
you are aware of how your child did on the test. I must get the
test back and keep it on file. I will not accept a note saying
you know the score of the test. I would like you to see the test
and sign it.

How is Reading graded?

Each story teaches specific skills. The reading grade is obtained
by tests that measure comprehension and the skills that were
taught. A test on the vocabulary, story comprehension and a
skills test is give for each story. Often worksheets are also
given that test these skills. Finally a Theme test
is given that covers all skills taught in the theme. We are not
allowed to send home any Reading materials. You will be informed
if your child is not doing well in reading.

How is Spelling graded?

Your child is assigned words for each story. The words are
written 4 times each in the Spelling notebook. Spelling sentences
are also done for each word. There are workbook pages assigned
for these words that are graded. I also give a context clues
worksheet to give practice in getting the meaning of words from a
sentence. Finally a spelling test is given. The workbook
pages, context clues worksheet and the tests are all graded to
obtain the final mark.

How is English graded?

Each Reading story concentrates on a specific English skill. This
skill is reinforced by our English book. Board work, workbook
pages and worksheets allow the children to practice these skills.
Grades are taken from these exercises and a Unit test. Students
are expected to write and spell correctly on all written work. I
will also take off if high frequency words are misspelled on any
written work.

How is Social Studies graded?

Your child is assigned homework on each lesson. I check that it
has been done and we review it in class. Your child should
correct any mstakes at this time. I also give a packet for each
chapter. This packet has worksheets for each lesson and any
skills taught in the chapter. These sheets are assigned
as we complete each lesson and these answers should be looked up
in the book.
At the end of the chapter, the packet is handed in and graded.
This mark counts as an "open book" test. At the end of each
chapter, there is a Chapter Review that is completed also using
the book. This is also graded. I also
give a vocabulary test and a "closed book" chapter test. I give
several types of test so that your child has many opportunities
to do well in my subject.

What should I do if my child is going to miss school?

If you know that your child will be absent because of a vacation
or an
appointment, please make arrangements to get the assignments
before he/she
leaves. Each day your child misses a great deal of work. Only the
most
important will be assigned. If the absences is for a week or
longer, some
work will have to be made up when he/she returns so the necessary
skills can
be taught.
