Happy New Year.........................................January 2010 has arrived

The month of January is going to be a busy one.  The children started writing personal narratives before the Christmas vacation.  The final copy will be going home soon.  We finally read 100 books for the scholastic book clubs.  Way to go first graders!!!!!!!!!!!!!

On October 19th the children started another reading program for the Wilkes-Barre Scranton Penguins called Robo's  Readers program.  When the children read 10 books they can get a voucher and trade it in for a free ticket to a penguins game.  A parent must then purchase a ticket to the same game .  Parents must write down the 10 books the children read on the blue paper that was sent home, sign the paper, and send it back to school.  The program runs until January 30th.  See you at the games.   GO PENS!!!!!!!!

Here are some of the activities we will be covering in the month of January:

READING -  Theme #5 -  Home Sweet Home starts on January 4th.  Some of the skills taught are compare and contrast, making generalizations, and cause and effect.  The phonics skills that are taught are beginning and ending letters sh, th, wh, ch, tch, long a and i, final letters ng, nk, nd, and contractions.

In the middle of January the children will be reading about Animal Adventures in Theme # 6.  The skills taught will be story structure, noting details, and making predictions.  The phonics skills taught are long e, o, and u, final blends ft, lk, and nt, and words with ai and ay in them.

We will be very busy writing personal narratives pieces in school.  Please practice this writing at home.

Please remember to review all vocabulary words and workbook pages sent home each night.  Skills tests will be given after each week and a Theme test will end the Theme.   Please watch for them in your child's homework folder.

MATH - We are moving right along in Math class.  The children are on Topic #10 Counting and Number Patterns to 100.  The children will be counting by 2, 5, and 10 to 100 on a hundred chart.  Odd and even numbers will be taught and patterns in a hundred chart will be used.  I will be giving another timed test on math fact families soon.  Please review your basic math fact families every night.

The Odyssey at home program is a big hit.  The children can't wait to hear me say that they went on the computer at home.  They have enjoyed all the treats and gifts I have given them as their reward.  Keep up the awesome work!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Please try to attend PTO meetings.  Our class wants to have the most parents in attendence to win a treat.  They are held in the first week of each month.

Thank you to everyone who sent in goodies for our Christmas party.  The children ate everything.

Just a reminder to all parents.............Please remember to sign all tests that go home with your child when they have a test.  It is very important to review your child's mistakes with them.

I look forward to working with you this year!    Please read with your child every night.
