Why does my child have a "missing" in the assignment section?

Students who have been absent and I do not see their work due to
the absence, are given a "missing" to their assignment until they
return to school. Once they return to school, I ask for their
assignment/ to complete the test or quiz. If they have it
completed, they will receive full credit. "Missing" assignments
are registered in progress book as a "0", however, this does not
mean that it is the student's grade. It only means, I am
awaiting the completion of the work. Once work is completed, the
appropriate grade will return.
