Word and Letter Reversals

Parents often become concerned when they see their child commonly reversing numbers, letters, and words. Most of the time this is developmental and perfectly normal for the beginning of first grade. As the year goes on, you should see less of this! Here are some things we do in school to help correct this problem. You may wish to try some of these at home!

1. We print words with the first letter green, to symbolize go, and the last letter as red to stop.
2. We have reminder tags on our desk to help us identify where to start writing.
3. We have number and letter lines attached to our desks as easy references.
4. We ask the children to correct reversed numbers and letters. Please have your child do the same on all homework sheets.
5. Draw a star where you want the child to start a word.
6. Practice writing letters that are commonly reversed such as b and d over and over again.
