These are words that are meant to broaden your child's vocabulary base. You will be amazed at how much your child's vocabulary will grow while he/she is in first grade. Your child is expected
to learn the definition of these words. These words are not words that your child willl be
required to spell or even learn to read. Although most of the children will begin to pick up on reading these words naturally. On the weekly reading tests, this section is read to the children. Some parents are hesitant about the degree of difficulty associated with these words. I have found that most children tend to do better on this section of the weekly tests than the regular sight vocabulary section so please do not panic! They love the "big" words!
