Homework

Homework is helpful with teaching students organization and responsibility. Your child should be
spending about 15-20 minutes on homework each night Monday-Thursday.

Required:

1. Reading Express: Each night your child will bring home a bag with a log, book, and decoding skill
bookmark. The bag and its contents should be returned to school daily. I would like students to read
their own books three nights a week, on Thursday they can choose any book and have it read to them.
Please remember the focus is the discussion and book talk you have with your child, not the writing of
the response.

2. Math Study Link: The yellow sheets that come home each night should be returned every day. Please
be sure your child writes their name at the top, looks at all directions, and completes each question.
Also, refer to the parent note in the top box for information on what we are doing in school.

On Weekends and As Needed:

1. Word Wall Words: The salmon colored word lists should be kept and practiced weekly. This will help
your child build a strong sight vocabulary which will enhance their reading skills. Please take note of the
Theme check ups that happen once every three weeks. The words that are highlighted on these lists
are the words your child should focus the most time on.

2. Word Families: These lists, sent home every Friday, introduce many new short vowel families. They
help students begin to develop the breakdown skills to recognize word chunks. Pointing these word
families out in readings can be very useful for students.

I ask that you please make sure your child completes their homework each night. However, I
understand that students have busy schedules and may not always have the opportunity to complete
homework. If your child is unable to complete the work, please send in a note requesting an extra
night to finish it.

Feel free to call or email me with any concerns or questions.
