As listeners and readers, students will listen, speak, read, and write for 
information and understanding. As speakers and writers, they willl use oral 
and written language to acquire, interpret, apply, and transmit information.

How important is reading? What is required?

Reading and writing is the heart of the Eighth Grade language 
arts program. Every student is required to read 20 pages a night 
and keep an account of the pages and responses to literature in 
the packet distributed to students. Completion of the packet is 
considered a major grade.

Every student will read two Civil War novels before attending 
the Gettysburg trip in October. Two essays required.

All students are required to read the works presented on the 
Reading Olympics list.  Whether a student attends the Olympics 
or not is their perogative.  The requirement is to read these 
books and become familiar with what is current in children's 
literature.
