Class Policies

RESPECT:  Please be respectful of your fellow students and me; it goes a long way.  This means simply waiting for your turn to talk and never using offensive or hurtful language.

BE PREPARED:  Always bring BOOKS and SUPPLIES to class.  Books must be covered within three (3) school days from the day they are issued.  Students need a notebook for this class.  Any kind is fine as long as it contains blank, lined paper and pockets for handouts. Students must always have something to write with.  I don’t have extra pens or pencils.

BE PROMPT:  Be in your assigned seat and ready to learn when the bell rings.  Effective immediately, 15 minutes of after school classroom detention will be given for lateness to class.  There are no “good” excuses for lateness.

HOMEWORK/CLASS WORK:  No late homework assignments are accepted.  If you are out sick, you should make every attempt to get the homework assignment.  This website should be checked daily.

WRITTEN WORK/PROJECTS:  These assignments carry quiz or test grades.  10 points will be deducted from your grade for every day late EVEN IN THE EVENT OF STUDENT ABSENCE (without medical note).  We will not always remind you of late assignments; you must take responsibility for yourself.

TESTS and QUIZZES:  Please make every effort to be here for tests/quizzes.  Make-up tests should be taken within two days of your return to school.  Quizzes and tests will receive a 25-point deduction if taken more than one week after your return to school.

NO EATING OR DRINKING DURING CLASS:  This is a school policy.

LAVATORY and LOCKERS:  Passes are given at my discretion during the first 5 and last 5 minutes of class only.  You must not leave the room without a pass.  Do not ask during lessons or activities.

SILENT READING:  Our class will soon begin “Silent Reading Mondays”.  We will read for 20 minutes every Monday (or Tuesday if class does not meet on Monday).  You are required to bring a book of your choice for silent reading (One book per quarter).  You MUST inform both your parent/guardian and us of your book decision each quarter.   You may read either fiction or nonfiction; however, your book must tell a story, i.e. it must have a plot, characters and literary devices.

Grade 11 College Preparatory Students ONLY:

RESEARCH PAPER: You will be required to complete a 5-7 page literature-based research paper.  This project will begin in late second quarter and complete in late third quarter.  You must hand in every single step of the writing process.  Failure to do so will result in failure on the paper.  Students who fail the research paper will be required to attend summer school whether they pass the class or not.  10 points will be deducted from your grade for every day late, even in the event of student absence.
