April 2009
Dear Parents and Students,
Earth Day will be celebrated on April 22, 2009! In 1970, Senator Gaylord
Nelson organized the very first Earth Day. He wanted to make people aware of
our planet's resources, ecology, and the dangers of pollution. What can you do
to celebrate Earth Day?
Read a GREEN book this month.
There are many books about nature, habitats, geography, scientific
investigation and ecological topics. Here are a few that you and your
child(ren) may enjoy reading:

by Jean Craighead George
Lets Celebrate Earth Day by Peter Roop
Planet Earth/Inside Out by Gail Gibbons
Recycle by Gail Gibbons
The Lorax by Dr. Seuss
The Garbage Monster by Sense, Bibins, and Bivins
50 Simple Things Kids Can Do to Save the Earth
by Earth Works Group
Earth Book for Kids: Activities to Help Heal the
Environment by Linda Schwartz
Reading Clinic: The 2009 Summer Reading Clinic provides diagnostic and
remedial reading instruction for children. Graduate students who are
completing their Master's degrees and preparing to become Reading Specialists
provide instruction to students for a nominal fee ($60). If you would like
more information about the program or would like to send an application for
your child to participate, contact your child's classroom teacher or me
immediately. Spaces are limited and fill up quickly.
Visit the "Resources for Parents" page that includes references for a
timely topic: Social Promotion and Retention. Also, be sure to take time to
review the special needs and gifted and talented student resources/topics
included on this page.
Read a good book lately?? The Henry Barnard School PARENT Book Club
invites you to join us at our next meeting!
Why an HBS PARENT Book Club? Research indicates that by 'walking the walk'
adults SHOW children the value of reading. We hope that our actions will show
Henry Barnard children that reading is not just something they are expected to
do at school, but rather, a life long activity that enriches life. We hope
they see that we, adults, set aside time for reading, for sharing our
responses and reactions with others, and enjoy the diversity and insights each
Book Club member shares with us.
As an Interventionist, I work in third, fourth, and fifth grade classrooms
on a daily basis. I work in classrooms and in Room 172(my classroom). Your
child may be working with me to strengthen reading, mathematics, writing or an
organizational skill. If you have any concerns or questions about your child's
learning, please talk with your child's teacher and to me as soon as possible.
We will be happy to make an appointment to meet with you.
This website (at http://TeacherWeb.com/RI/HenryBarnardSchool/cannon) is
intended to be a resource for both you and your child(ren). I look forward to
working with your children this year and with you. Please feel free to call
me at school or send an e-mail at mcannon@ric.edu.
