thletes,
To
those of you who are old hat when it comes to Cross Country, I welcome you
back. To the new parents and
athletes I welcome you to an exciting and fun sport. The sport is only in its 12th=
year at BE and we have already won 4 State Championships and been a State Runner-up twice=
. 2008 was a particularly good year =
with
the boys winning their first state championship.
For those who are new to cross country, let me tell you a little ab=
out
our sport. It is a very excit=
ing
sport that is both team and individual oriented. At each race the athletes =
will
run on a 3.1-mile course of varying terrain. The course may have hills, sand, w=
ater,
grass, mounds and other obstacles (including deer) to challenge the
runners. An athlete may striv=
e for
individual goals but as mentioned earlier the main emphasis is on the TEAM.=
This sport allows all to succeed no
matter what the ability. By t=
he end
of the season, if you have worked hard, you will be in the best shape of yo=
ur
life and most definitely will have achieved many goals. You will have also made many new f=
riends
on your team and from other teams.
Returning athletes please take the time to welcome our new team mem=
bers
and get to know them. As you =
know
the reason this team has had so much success is due to the fact that we help
and encourage each other. We =
are a
family and I look forward to another successful and enjoyable season.
The
school requires all of athletes to have a physical on record at BE before t=
hey
can begin practice. If you do=
not have
one I suggest you go to Doctor’s Care and they can get you in that day
for $30.

p; We had conditioning se=
ssions
over the summer to help those athletes that wished to get a jump on the
season. They knew it is very =
difficult
to have a successful season if they did not run in the summer. We had two girls exceed 150 miles, two exceed 200 miles and one reach 300 miles. T=
he boys
had two exceed 150 miles, one exceed 200 miles a=
nd
three exceed 300 miles. Great job to those who worked v=
ery hard
this summer.
Practices will be held daily after school from 3=
:30
– 5:00ish and may be canceled due to inclement weather (but don’=
;t
count on it). Occasiona=
lly
practices will go until 5:30 or 6:00.
I will remind your athlete the day before these runs so that they may
keep you informed. The extend=
ed
practice will allow us to get in much needed long runs. Varsity athletes will also be
strongly encouraged to participate in long runs on Saturdays in August.
These will be geared as long slow runs to build up the mileage.

An athlete will not be allowed to do cross country if they do=

have these forms in before August 20th.
Because cross country is not a
revenue generating sport each athlete is required to bring $30.00 ca=
sh
or check by August 20th.

This money will be used =
for
team expenses only. This will
include spikes, food and beverages for all of the meets. If you are unable to come up with =
the
$30 please let me know and I will make an exception.
Team warm-ups will be ordered on August 20t=
h.
If your athlete would like a se=
t of
warm-ups please make the check payable to BEHS. You are not required to purchase t=
hese warmups, but they do make great jackets to wear on th=
e cool
days latter in the season. The cost of the warmups
will be $90.00. I will only be
placing one order so do not miss the deadline.
