About The Teacher
Dr. Awkerman is starting his 8th year at Bishop England. Prior to BE, he served as an area school superintendent in Charleston, college professor in the graduate program at the Citadel, director of science for Charleston schools, college chemistry professor in Florida, and high school chemistry teacher in new York. He has published several books in chemistry, oceanography, management science, and education as well as about 30 professional papers/journal articles. His recent interest has been in the design and renovation of his last two homes--taking old dilapidated houses and giving them back their pride. His wife Andi is a high school technology educator in Charleston. Their older daughter is leaving the corporate world to become a teacher in Baltimore this year--another educator in the family, and their younger daughter, presently completing her master degree in Medicine in Tennessee, plans to be a Certified Physician Assistant. Their old Chesapeake Bay Retriever is currently unemployed but looking.
Mission Label:
Mission
Dr. Awkerman takes a balanced approach to chemistry instruction, bringing together scientific literacy with solid content. Students who complete the course should possess an emotional and social framework for chemistry in their world, while grasping chemistry content at a level such that they can favorably compete with all other college chemistry students.
