Fishing for Good Behavior
What is the manangement system in your classroom? All children have their own pocket full of cards for each day. The goal is to keep all your cards each day. A verbal warning will be given without any consequences. If that child continues with the same inattention or misbehavior, the child will be asked to give me one of his/her cards. This gives the student ownership for the behavior and provides immediate discussion of positive choices for behavior. This is the same procedure that we follow whether your child pulls only one card or all in one day's time. *If your child harms another child or the teacher they will not be given a warning and will be asked to pull a card immediately. I must ensure the safety of all children. 1st warning-verbal 2nd warning- remove a green card-rough waters 3rd warning- remove a yellow card stormy weather and sit for 5 minutes during free choice centers 4th warning- remove a red card-tailspin and sit for 10 minutes during free choice centers. Parents will also be called. 5th warning- remove a blue card-Shipwreck Island-Child will be blue because child will be sent to Assistant Principals office where parents will be contacted. *Please note that if a childs behavior warrants immediate danger to another student or to himself/herself the above steps will not be followed and the child will be sent directly to the assistant principals office. My goal is to keep you aware of your childs behavior by marking the behavior report weekly in your childs folder. Talk to your child about any problems and praise your child for their good behavior. Sign at the end of the week to show that you are aware of your childs behavior. This will be our major form of communication about behavior throughout the year. If you ever have a question about your childs behavior you can write a note in their folder or call the classroom and leave a note on my voicemail. What does it mean to sit during free choice? Will they sit at recess? Free choice is offered every afternoon. Each child chooses the center/s they would like to spend their time. They are free to rotate from center to center as long as there is an opening. Due to crowd control centers are limited to three students a piece. The star of the day is called to choose first and then the remainder of the class is randomly called. If a child has pulled a card, this is when they must sit. I have found this to be very effective. The child must wait until their time is up and chances are the center they want to go to is already full. Recess is never taken away from a child! So much of their day they are told what to do and when to do it. Recess is their time to let their hair down and just be a kid! How will I know about my child's daily behavior? Each day if your child has not pulled a card I will stamp their hand at the end of the day. Please know however that we all have bad days and we cannot be perfect everyday. Always encourage your child to do their best. If you see your child is having difficulties we will discuss a plan for making positive changes together. You are also welcome to email me if you have any questions. I always check my email before I leave school and the last thing before I go to bed. I will respond to your email as quickly as I can. What is the treasure box and how does it work? At the end of the week I offer treasure box for my students. If a child has not pulled any cards all week they can choose 2 items from the treasure box. If a child has only pulled 1 day they can choose 1 item. *The child can pull all cards in a day's time, but if they only pull 1 day they still get treasure box. Everyone is entitled to a bad day every now and then. If a child pulls two days they do not receive treasure box. Do you provide weekly behavior information? Your child's F.I.S.H. folder will have a behavior log stapled to the inside. The form shows you a happy face, a straight lip face, and a frowny face for each week. The child will have a happy face circled if they have pulled 0 or 1 day, a straight face will be circled if they have pulled 2 days and a frowny face will be circled if your child pulls cards for three or more days in a week's time. Parents are asked to sign this on a weekly basis. Do you have end of the year awards for behavior? YOU BET! If a child has pulled 5 cards or less all year, Mrs. Holden goes to Target! Last year I was so proud that I was able to purchase 4 big end of the year prizes. Three students had pulled 5 or less all year and I got a chance to brag on them. I also had one young lady that did not pull any cards ALL YEAR! Her prize was much bigger and she was given a crown and dubbed the Queen of Kindergarten! Way to go Trinity! |
