100 Book Challenge

Points to remember with the 100 Book program: Your child should hold the book correctly. Find the word and put his/her pointer finger on it (using the hand he/she writes with). Look at the picture and say the word(Y book). It is OK for you to help! If your child has a book (YY) with a sentence or a phrase, then he/she should find the first word and put his/her pointer finger on it. Look at the picture. YOU (the parent) should read the first page and help your child move his/her finger to the next word as you read it. Then your child should read the page while pointing to each word. Then go to the next page and read it alone. If your child has trouble with the word in the sentence/phrase that is different, it is OK to help them with it. Very soon everyone will be able to read these by themselves or with very little help. Read the books several times for 15 minutes. Then have your child write 1 title, level (Y or YY), date, and you sign 1 line for 15 minutes. You can sign 1 more line if you practice sight words and letter names and sounds for 15 minutes. (Write “sightwords” on the line, date and sign it.) Your child will write a new line at night. Do not sign the same line that we sign at school.
Important Information on the Program: The 100 Book Challenge is a systematic independent reading program that allows each student to read at his or her independent success level every day. The goal is for students to spend 30 minutes every day reading. They then record their books (1 line for every 15 minutes of reading) on their log sheet. Students may log two steps a day if they read at home for 30 minutes, and up to 6 steps on weekends. This program allows the students to be exposed to new vocabulary without becoming frustrated by the reading level. All students need to read a minimum of 11 steps a week to stay at the school goal. 100 Book Challenge is part of their nightly homework. It is a fact, the more your child reads, the more successful they will be in all subjects. CONGRATULATIONS TO THESE STUDENTS FOR REACHING 100 LINES!!!!!
