*these rules are from the 08-09 school year and will be updated after school
starts with the rules the 09-10 students have chosen.
I believe the children should help create the rules for the classroom. We
will do this on the first day if school. I usually “guide” the discussion
but if the children set the rules then they do a better job of following
them. This also gives them ownership as well as builds classroom community.
On the First Day of School we discussed what we should do and should not in
the classroom. The students came up with these rules for classroom behavior:
1. Be kind to others.
2. Take care of our things.
3. Be Safe.
I ask the students to sign their names on the rules as if it were a contract
between us. I later get them to make their own self portrait.
I think they did a fabulous job!
