Course Title: Fitness/(Volleyball or Basketball)/Badminton

Course Description: This is a one unit course in fitness, volleyball or
basketball, and badminton. Students will learn offensive and defensive
strategy, scoring, and skills in volleyball/basketball and badminton.
This course will represent a wide range of topics related to health,
physical fitness, and how to establish a high quality lifestyle.
Students will learn to assess their own health and fitness level and
design their own personal fitness programs. Additionally this course
will provide knowledge and skills used in exhibiting proficiency in the
two movement forms of volleyball/basketball and badminton. This course
will help students satisfy the requirements for Performance Indicators
1, 2, 3, and 4 of the South Carolina Physical Education curriculum
requirements. Mastery of information will provide students with the
concepts needed to maintain a desired state of fitness throughout their
lifetime.
Course Objectives: Students who successfully complete Fitness /(Volleyball
or Basketball) / Badminton with a passing grade of 70 or higher will
have demonstrated the abilities, concepts, knowledge, and skills
required to accomplish the following course objectives:
Performance Indicator 1: Demonstrate competency in at least two
movement forms.
Performance Indicator 2: Design and develop an appropriate physical
fitness program to achieve a desired level of personal fitness.
Performance Indicator 3: Participate regularly in health enhancing
physical activity outside the physical education class.
Performance Indicator 4: Meet the gender and age group health related
physical fitness standard for the Fitnessgram.
Curriculum Content Standards in Physical Education:
A physically educated person
Standard 1: Demonstrates competency in many movement forms and
proficiency in a few movement forms.
Standard 2: Applies movement concepts and principles to the learning
and development of motor skills.
Standard 3: Exhibits a physically active lifestyle.
Standard 4: Achieves and maintains a health-enhancing level of
physical fitness.
Standard 5: Demonstrates responsible personal and social behavior in
physical activity settings.
Standard 6: Demonstrates understanding and respect for differences
among people in physical activity settings.
Standard 7: Understands that physical activity provides the
opportunity for enjoyment, challenge, self-expression, and
social interaction.
Grading Plan: Student progress will be cumulatively assessed each nine
weeks based on these methods of evaluation-
1st Semester
Dressing Out/Class Participation 50%
Fitness Projects (activities + written assignments) 25%

Tests (Chapter Tests, Fitness Plan , & Out of class

Dress out policy: Each student needs to wear royal blue mesh shorts, gray t-
shirt, socks and athletic shoes. Physical education uniforms are
available from the PE teachers. Each uniform will cost $20, $10 for
shorts and $10 for a shirt. Please make checks payable to Eastside
High School. Each student will start the nine weeks with a grade of
100 for dress and participation. Every day a student fails to dress or
participate 10 points will be subtracted from the dress and
participation portion of the grade. For example, missing one day will
result in a grade of 90, 2 days will be an 80, 3 days will be a 70, and
4 days will result in a 60/F for dress and participation.
Journal/Portfolio: Each student will be required to keep a journal/portfolio
with all daily assignments and note sheets. This folder will be kept in
the teacher’s office and returned as needed.

Homework:
·Students will be required to bring gym clothes daily.
·Each student is required to participate in activities outside of
class for at least 3 days/week for a 6 week period. Each student will be
given a sheet each week that the parent/coach must sign confirming this
participation. A cumulative grade will be assigned upon completion of this
assignment. The weighting for this assignment will be two test grades.
·A personal fitness plan must be completed in written form. This will
also count as two test grades.
·Each student is expected to study for tests when assigned.
Required Materials:
·royal blue mesh shorts & gray t-shirt,(available from instructor) socks
and tennis shoes daily.
·loose leaf paper and/or a notebook daily.
·bring pen or a pencil daily.
·Students will turn in teacher provided file folder daily.
Attendance: Any absences exceeding ten(10) must be verified by a physician’s
statement; otherwise, no credit will be given for the course.
Parents and students are reminded that early dismissals and/or late
arrivals count against the absence total.
Tardies to school: Any student arriving after 8:00 will be required to
report to the attendance office to get a tardy slip. Each tardy
student will be assigned detention either Monday, Tuesday, or
Thursday from 3:40 – 5:00 unless the tardy is excused.
Tardies to class: Any student arriving in the gym or locker rooms after the
bell has sounded is considered tardy. Each tardy student will be
assigned an after school detention.
Make Up Policy: It is the student’s responsibility to make up work within
five days of an absence. Any work not made up will result in a zero. If a
student is present on the day a test is announced and absent on the day of
the test, he/she must take the test the day he/she returns.
Classroom Behavior Rules:
·Bring necessary materials with you daily.
·Follow directions, be prepared and pay attention.
·Get dressed quickly and wait in the locker room until the teacher dismisses
everyone. Use the restroom before leaving the locker room. No one will
be allowed to use the restroom during class time.
·Do not leave the gym without permission. If a student leaves the gym
without permission, he or she will be assigned an after school detention.
·Respect school property. Keep all equipment, bleachers, gym, and
locker rooms in good condition.
·Keep off of the bleachers, including the small set beside the storage room.
·No food, drink, or gum in the gym at any time.
·No grabbing onto the basketball goals.
·No horseplay in the locker rooms or gym.
·When the whistle blows, give the teacher your attention.
·No one will be allowed to use cell phones/MP3/CD/tape players during class
time.
·Make-up work is your responsibility.
Classroom Procedures and Expectations:
·Students are to be in the locker rooms by the final note of the bell.
·The attendance and tardy policies have been listed in the syllabus.
·You are allowed a maximum of 10 absences before credit is denied.
·More than five minutes late to class is considered a cut. If you
miss half of the class period it will be counted as an absence.
·After an absence you must report to the attendance office to get an
admittance slip.
·Each student is expected to dress out and participate every day.
Shoes other than athletic shoes will not be allowed on the gym floor. If a
student does not have proper shoes, they will not be considered as dressed
for that day.
·Valuables are not to be brought to the gym. Students are asked not
to bring large sums of money to school. Lockers are not designed for
valuable items. Lockers should be used only for clothes storage during
class time. Wallets, purses jewelry, etc should be turned in to the
teacher at the beginning of the period. It is the student’s responsibility
to pick up all personal items before leaving. If items are stolen,
Eastside High School cannot be responsible.
Weight Room Rules
·Absolutely no horseplay!
·Keep it clean, no food, glass bottles, etc.
·Make sure your area is clear of equipment before lifting.
·Make sure your collars are snug.
·Make eye contact with those near you before lifting.
·Protect your lower back: Head up, buttocks down, spread the chest,
lock in lower back, use a belt.
·Never interfere with a lifter.
·Spot carefully! Concentration on the lifter.
·Return weights to racks when finished.
·Help and encourage each other!
·Make your friend great!
Discipline Policy: Disciplinary rules are outlined in your student
handbook. Students will be verbally warned the first time a rule is
broken. The parent will be contacted if the behavior persists. A referral
will be written as a last resort or for any major infraction.
