Flashcard Logs |
Below is what a flashcard log looks like and what things need to be filled in each week. The flashcard logs are due every Wednesday, unless otherwise announced. Single day holidays do not affect the turn in day. For example, if school is not in session because of President's Day, the flashcard log will still be due that Wednesday. The flashcard logs are to be done on three separate days, and should be around 10-15 minutes for each session. You may work longer on a session, but it may not count for two sessions. These may be done with a parent at first, but should eventually be done independently. Focus on working on those facts that you are not familiar with. Do not waste valuable time going over 2+2=4, when you already know that 2 plus 2 equals 4. Split your flashcards into two piles- one pile of facts that you have memorized and another pile of facts that you need to work on. Once you have the facts that you have memorized in one pile, SET THEM ASIDE AND DO NOT GO BACK TO THEM! Work on those facts that you are not familiar with and then gradually take those facts and add them to the "memorized pile". You will then see that you are spending the majority of your time on the facts you do not know well, and will be getting the practice you need. You should be able to see the results on your speed drills. What is a speed drill? A speed drill is a sheet of facts that you are expected to complete in a certain amount of time. Ample amount of time will be given at the beginning of the year, but will gradually be shortened as each week goes on. This counts as 10% of your math grade which you can see why it is so important to practice your flashcards three times a week. Why are speed drills important? I want you to be able to KNOW your facts without counting on your fingers, pausing, or thinking about what is for lunch :) When I ask you "What is your name?" you automatically reply with "Name". In the same way, when you see 7+9= ? you should immediately be able to write the answer 16 in the blank. This will sharpen your thinking skills and help tremendously in math class. Flash Card Practice Due: _________________________________
Students should practice flashcards 10 – 15 minutes for each session. Having facts “called out” to the student, playing a computer or electronic game, writing the facts, etc. is not considered doing flashcard practice for these sessions. Please make sure the student uses flashcards for this assignment. Please record ALL information for each session. The sessions should not be completed on the same night. Each session should be done on a different day. The weekly flashcard log is due every Wednesday morning when the student arrives at school. If the students are working on a Mastering Math Facts sheet that night, five of the 10-15 minutes may count towards that session.
Student initials after he/she checked the log.
