Below is what a reading
log looks like and what things need to be filled in each week. The reading
logs are due every Wednesday, unless otherwise announced. Single day holidays
do not affect the turn in day. For example, if school is not in session
because of President's Day, the reading log will still be due that Wednesday.
The reading logs are to be
done on three separate days, and should be around 10-15 minutes for each
session. You may work longer on a session, but it may not count for two
sessions. The first five minutes should be read orally to a parent, and then
the remainder of the time can be done silently. You may not have your parent
read to you and count that in for your time. This session is for you to
practice reading and comprehension.
This counts as a homework
grade and is 10% of your reading grade. You will see much improvement on your
reading comprehension quizzes because you have taken time to be a good reader.
Do not be discouraged because you do not read as well as someone else does.
This is not a competition, but a learning and growing experience. You will
have to work hard if you want to become a good reader. Reading is fun! If you
think it is boring that is because you have made it boring! Who says you have
to read about boring things? If reading about railroads puts you to sleep, get
a book that excites you! If you want to read about whales in the sea, go to
the library and read about whales in the sea. If you love dogs, there are
plenty of books that talk about dog training, dog food, walking your dog, etc.
There is a whole world to explore through reading.
If you complain about
reading, stop first and think about what it would be like to not be able to
see. You would have to learn to read using Braille. This is what blind
students have to learn in order to read books. Braille is a formation of
little dots raised on paper so that when a person touches the page, they feel
the little dots and know what word it makes. They use their hands to feel the
raised dots and this is how they read. Start thanking the Lord today that He
gave you eyes to see and the ability to read!
Book It
This year we will be doing the Book It Reading program
that Pizza Hut sponsors. A coupon for a personal pan pizza will be given to
the student who reads two chapter books. The chapter books need to have a
minimum of 75 pages, and I must have a note from the parent stating that their
child has read the book. The books read may be counted for their reading logs.
We will start Book It at the end of September.
Weekly
Reading
Log
Due: _________________________________
The weekly reading log AND
the books that were read are due every Wednesday morning when the student
arrives at school. The
student should read at least 15 to 20 minutes in each session.
At least the first
five minutes of each session should be read orally
to a parent or an adult. The
remaining time can be read silently. The
sessions should not be completed on the same night.
Each session should be done
on a different day. The
student should bring the books that were read for this log so the
teacher can check the material that was read. The books should be brought in
WITH this log on the due date. If
inappropriate material was read, that session will not be counted as
accurately completed and either points will be deducted or no credit will be
given depending on how much is incorrect. Please
record ALL information for each session. (It is acceptable to
let the students fill in the information where appropriate.)
**If the student is
reading the approved book review book for any sessions, that book does NOT
need to be brought in with this log since I’ve already seen the book.

Students should be reading
material on his/her reading level. A
great book to read is the book that the student is reading for the assigned
book reviews. Appropriate
material should be read. The
students should be reading chapter books. Inappropriate
material would include “easy read” books like picture books, textbooks from
class, newspapers, and the Bible (while we want the students to begin daily
reading of the Bible this isn’t the appropriate time).
Students should be
reading new material for each session and each log. A book may be continued
into the next session or log but should not be reread for another log.
In addition, the student
should be reading for the whole session; a discussion about the reading is
great, but should not be counted as part of the 15-20 minutes.
Student
initials after he/she checked the log.
