MATH HELPS

Automaticity! What is automaticity? When I ask you your name, you say it
without even thinking about it. You know phone numbers and addresses
"off the top of your head." These are examples of automaticity.
This is the goal for all of the basic math facts in fourth grade.

HOW SHOULD I PRACTICE MY FACTS?

Focus on working on those facts that you are not familiar with.
Do not waste valuable time going over 2+2=4 when you already know
that 2+2=4.

Split your flashcards into two piles- one pile of facts that you
have memorized and another pile of facts that you need to work
on.
Once you have the facts that you have memorized in one pile, SET
THEM ASIDE AND DO NOT GO
BACK TO THEM! Work on those facts that you are not familiar with
and then gradually take those facts and add them to
the "memorized pile". You will then see that you are spending the
majority of your time on the facts you do not know well, and will
be getting the practice you need. You should be able
to see the results on your speed drills.

WHAT IS A SPEED DRILL?

A speed drill is a sheet of facts that you are expected to
complete in a certain amount of time. Ample amount of time will
be given at the beginning of the year, but will gradually be
shortened as each week goes on. This counts as part of your math
grade. You can see why it is so important to practice your
flashcards three times a week.

WHY ARE SPEED DRILLS IMPORTANT?

I want you to be able to KNOW your facts without counting on your
fingers, pausing, or thinking about what is for lunch :) When I
ask you "What is your name?" you automatically reply with
your "Name". You do not have to stop to figure out what your name
is. In the same way, when you see 7+9= ? you should immediately
be able to write the answer 16 in the blank. This will sharpen
your thinking skills and free up your brain
space to think about the rest of the problem that includes the
math fact.

FOR EXAMPLE: If you do not have to think about the math fact when
working long division or a multiplication problem, you can focus
harder on the procedure and get the problems done quicker.

WHAT TIME SHOULD I SET AS MY GOAL?

The class goal for this quarter is:
50 addition/subtraction in 1:15 with 93% accuracy Quarter 1
60 multiplication/division in 2:00 with 93%accuracy Quarter 1
Less time is even BETTER!
