Options for the book report are as follows: DIRECTIONS: You will read a novel of your choice each nine weeks, and respond in one of the following ways. You MUST try three of the options before you can repeat one. Due dates: 10/17/08, 12/12/08, 3/13/09, and 5/8/09. You may turn your report in any time before the due date for extra points. 1. Double-entry journal. Choose at least 5 events/incidents/situations in the novel. Briefly describe the event (very briefly), and then respond to it in a very well-developed paragraph (7 sentences minimum). Your response can include such things as the theme the author is addressing, character motivation, analysis/interpretation of plot events, and so on. The range of responses is limited only by your imagination, but responses must be analytical. 2. Theme essay. Five paragraphs, with an introduction, body and conclusion. You must sufficiently explain why you think this is the theme, giving specific examples from the novel that support the theme. 3. Oral presentation. You might write and perform (or videotape) a skit based on the novel, a commercial, a dramatic reading, stage a debate between two characters, give a speech, or come up with some other idea. Again, this option is limited only by your imagination. Presentations must be at least three minutes long (five minutes for a better grade). 4. Art project. Drawing, collage, book jacket design, mural, poster, model, etc. You must present your art project and explain how the art work represents something of significance to one of the novel’s themes. **************************************************************************** SAMPLE THEME PARAGRAPH FOR "THE MOST DANGEROUS GAME" (Every sentence in a paragraph has a JOB) Sometimes, superstitions have a basis in fact, as evidenced in Richard Connell's "The Most Dangerous Game." (State author’s name, title, global thesis). In this story, General Zaroff controls Ship-Trap Island, which has "an evil name among sea-faring men" (200). (Begin analysis of events that are local to the story, Blend quotes in with your own words and with the grammar of your sentence). Sailors fear the island, and no man has ever returned to tell tales of the place. (Each sentence advances the global thesis of superstition/fear/evil, giving detail local to the story.) When a shipwreck occurs, no survivors (WC relates sentence to global thesis) return. Therefore, sailors "have a curious dread of the place" (199). The dread (WC) is valid; the island is an evil place, run by an evil man. Stranded sailors become prey (WC) for the expert hunter, Zaroff, as he plays his most dangerous game with human beings instead of animals. The trapped (WC) sailors are well-treated at first, with good food and ample exercise. However, the treatment changes (WC) swiftly when a sailor is chosen to play the “game.” Zaroff equips a sailor with a knife, gives him a three-hour head start, and then hunts him down and kills him (WC). The "superstitious" sailors who sail past the island safely are correct in believing that Ship- Trap Island broadcasts "vibrations of evil" (200). Their superstitions are, in fact, hard truths about a murderous villain. (Return to global thesis of superstitions having a basis in fact/truth). ***************************************************************************** Make--Up Work You are expected to turn in all assignments on time. If you have an excused absence, you may make up the work according to the following guidelines: 1. If you are absent on the day an assignment is due, you are to submit it on the day you return to school. 2. If you are absent on the day a daily assignment is given, you have five school days to submit that assignment. 3. If you are absent the day a quiz or test is given, you must make it up within five days of returning to school. 4. If you choose not to turn in an assignment or make up a test as stated by the above guidelines, you will receive a zero. 5. Realizing that emergencies do arise, I will work with you when extenuating circumstances exist. It is your responsibility to find out what work needs to be made up, and to make arrangements with me to do so. Late Assignments (without absence) If you CHOOSE to submit an assignment late, you will receive half credit (50%) if you submit within two days. On the third day, you will receive a ZERO. As this is a high school level class, and it is my responsibility to prepare you for the rigors of high school, I expect you to accept the consequences of your own choices¡Xif you CHOOSE not to actively involve yourself in assignments, you will leave me no CHOICE but to mark the grade you earned. I do NOT GIVE partial credit for assignments that have not been attempted; you will receive a ZERO.
