This is Mrs. Brunson's second year as the Vocal Core instructor at RMSA.
She is a graduate of Furman University with a Master's degree from
Charleston Southern University. She has taught middle school vocal/choral
music for 23 years.
Mrs. Brunson spent 15 years of her career as choral director at Laing Middle
School. The Laing Chorus participated in many choral activities in South
Carolina as well as in Chicago, Charlotte, Atlanta, and Orlando. She has
led student trips to these places and has also taken students to England,
France, Austria, Germany, Switzerland, and Italy. The Laing Chorus twice
received first place in the South Carolina Middle School Choral Festival.
In her first year at RMSA, Mrs. Brunson provided Rollings students with
opportunities that were new to some, including the choral Solo & Ensemble
Festival and middle school choral clinics. The 2006-2007 Star Singers
scored two Superior and one Excellent rating at Solo & Ensemble Festival;
straight superiors at the SC Choral Festival (both ensembles!); and straight
superiors at the Carowinds Choral Festival. 10 RMSA students were selected
for the SC ACDA Junior Honor Choir, which will perform in October.
Mrs. Brunson is an active music professional, serving on the State Junior
High/Middle School Committee of the Choral Division of SCMEA for the past 12
years (chaired the committee for four years). She is a strong advocate for
music literacy and has developed a curriculum for her students that is
challenging as well as age-appropriate.
Mrs. Brunson and her husband were the first secondary choral directors in
the tri-county area to become National Board Certified teachers. Among the
tenets of the NBC teachers is that students be given varied and meaningful
opportunities inside and outside the classroom to develop their choral
skills. The curriculum Mrs. Brunson has created for Rollings Middle School
Vocal Core students is carefully planned to allow students to grow as
musicians in the Rollings classroom, to perform as responsible members of
the community, and to participate with students from Rollings as well as
other schools in choral activities within our state and beyond.
