Greek Origin Myths
Objective: Using their knowledge of myth, students will create
an original Greek hero and create an origin myth story.
Part I: You should have completed a hero/god web and visualization for
an original god/hero in class.
Now: Write a twelve line ode paying tribute to your hero. It does not
have to rhyme but be aware of your rhythm and tone. In verse form, write
about how awesome your original hero or god is.
An ode is a poem that pays tribute to something using dignified
language.
Part II: Write an origin myth. An origin myth is a myth that
gives an explanation for how something came to be. For instance, “The
Origin of the Seasons” is an origin myth, explaining how the seasons came to
be with the story of Demeter, Hades, and Persephone. The Greek hero you
created should be the main character in your origin myth.
Options and Requirements: (Choose one)
1. Visual: Create a comic book-style story of your Greek god or
goddess, describing their origin and powers. Your comic book should contain
the elements of an origin myth and be at least two 8x11” sheets long. This
should be in color. Stick figures are not acceptable. It should look like it
took a lot of effort and time.
2. Written: Write the story of your origin myth. Your story MUST have
a clear beginning, middle, and end. It cannot merely be a chapter in a longer
story. We want a resolution! Your story must be at least two pages long,
typed, and double-spaced.
3. Performance: Create a short film telling the story of your origin
myth. Your film should be no longer than 5 minutes, and it should have a
clear beginning, middle, and end. Remember that the hero you created in class
is your main character! You must bring your video to class, and you must have
a written script to turn into me.
You will turn in your hero web, your hero/god visualization, your ode, and
your final origin myth.
Tentative due date: April 17th (this means you have three weeks. I
expect your final product to be amazing and perfect )
