---------------------------------------------------------------------------
A special thank you goes to all my artists. Each of you have gained new
skills and created amazing work during the 2008 – 2009 school year. Your
dedication is evident in the art you created.
Our district arts coordinator and our SCDE Distinguished Arts Programs grant
provided wonderful opportunities. Our walking field trip in the fall yielded
wonderful sketches and photographs of Summerville sculptures. Students used
these as references for acrylic paintings on canvas. Three artist
residencies were highlights for the year: Bob Doster worked with our students
to create and install a large steel sculpture; Julie McCraney-Brogdon worked
with our Level 2 students as they created figures in clay; Diane Hopkins-
Hughs led Level 1 and Level 2 students on an architectural photo trip and
guided students in creating individual ‘joiners’ and a large photo montage
with a photo from each student.
Through grant funds, each student now has a digital portfolio. This
portfolio contains scanned and photographed images of the work produced this
year. Each year, the work produced will be added to create a record of the
students’ entire RMSA career.
Our final art show on Friday, May 5th, was an opportunity to exhibit our
students’ work and celebrate their success. I am so proud of each of you!
Have a super summer, and I’ll see you in August!
To our wonderful parents, I extend my greatest appreciation. Your support of
our program is critical to our success. Without the help of parents, we
could not provide field study trips, have successful events (such as our
community exhibits), or provide special opportunities (like our soon to be
installed photo montage). Thank you sincerely!

Our photography unit resulted in exciting student work.
Each student selected their best photograph of an architectural detail on a
building near RMSA, and then copped this photo so that it is 4” x 4”. All
these photos will be combined to make a large photomontage that will be about
4 feet square. We have received a quote to have this montage framed so that
we can install it in our main building. The total cost will be about $400.
* Anyone wishing to contribute to framing costs may contact me via email or
by calling the school. The finished product will be great!
Students used their remaining photos to create a collage in the style of
artist David Hockney. These pieces are on display at school.

photographs with Mrs. Hughs. We will be using digital cameras. Any students
wishing to bring their own cameras may. Any parent wishing to walk with us
is welcome - just check in at the school office when you arrive.

Level 1 and 2 artists have done a great job with their sculptures. Level 1

Studio update:
Level 1 artists are creating sculptures in the style of Louise Nevelson.
Nevelson predominantly created black sculptures of assembled wood objects
arranged to create complex designs of repeating shapes and forms. Our
sculptures include found objects of every description.
Level 2 artists are continuing their 12" x 16" acrylic paintings in the
style of artist, Chuck Close. Stop by to see our artists at work!
_______________________________________________________________
Level 1 students are finishing acrylic paintings of ducks. They are are
working from observation using taxidermy ducks. They are using photographs
for the background. We will be submitting completed paintings in the South
Carolina Junior Duck Stamp competition.
Level 2 students are working on portraits in the style of Chuck Close.
These paintings are challenging and exciting.
Elective classes are creating acrylic paintings in which they demonstrate
their understanding of composition and color theory.
